In the U.S. alone, over 50 million babies have been aborted since 1973 (Legal, par.1). The statistics on abortion are astonishing and they continue to rise every single day. Webster 's dictionary defines abortion as “a medical procedure used to end a pregnancy and cause the death of the fetus” (Entry 1). Some say that it is a woman’s body so she should decide what to do with her baby, while others say that it takes the rights away from the child. From every side, there are many opinions on this rising issue in America. Although abortion has become common in today’s society, it should be illegal because it creates future problems in relationships, causes those who abort their children to avoid responsibility, and kills …show more content…
A 2002 study by Southern Medical Journal showed that “women who abort their baby were 154% more likely to commit suicide than women who carried to term” (Legal, 5). Imaginably, shame and regret accompany an abortion, also. These problems can create future issues in relationships. Realistically, some women abort their baby so that their male companion will not leave them. However, most men end up leaving them anyway. When guilt and shame bombard that woman because of the abortion that she had, it could prevent her from having healthy relationships in the future. A lot of people don’t hear about - or understand, for that matter - the long term effects that come with abortions. There are many stories that talk about the psychological effects that come with this act. “They speak of overwhelming guilt, nightmares, excessive drinking, drug abuse, promiscuity, an inability to form or maintain relationships, difficulty bonding with later children, and other ways in which they are suffering” (Audiences, par. 9). The psychological effects that accompany and abortion are numerous and, in some cases, unheard …show more content…
There are many arguments rising that “a fetus is not a living being” (Apology, par. 16). A lot of women who are behind the Pro-Choice movement are also devout feminists. “Properly defined, feminism is a philosophy that embraces basic rights for all human beings without exception - without regard to race, religion, sex, size, age, location, disability or percentage” (Abortion, par. 1). In simple terms, feminists believe that everyone deserves equal rights. Feminists believe in nondiscrimination against any sex, race, religion, etc. So, if feminists believe in equal rights for everyone, why are babies excluded from that category? In truth, “abortion betrays the basic feminist principles of nonviolence, nondiscrimination, and justice for all” (Abortion, par. 45). Now, some may say that a baby is not actually a human being, it is a fetus or “just tissue”. From a scientific perspective, the “zygote is the name of the first cell formed at conception, the earliest developmental stage of the human embryo” (Audiences, par. 7). Based on this quote, one might ask, “What is a zygote actually?” “The zygote is composed of human DNA and other molecules, so its nature is undeniably human and not some other species” (Audiences, par. 9). From a scientific viewpoint, a baby is, in fact, a human being – it is not just tissue. Some argue that it is a woman’s body, so she should decide what to do with her body. Here’s the logical argument to
