As I reflect on my original paper and the information that has been discussed in this class and in the readings I can honestly say that in my twenty plus years of teaching I have had two principals that I would say were true leaders. As I wrote my initial paper I was thinking of all my past principals and the leadership qualities and characteristics they possessed and had in common but after this class what these principals had in common was one thing how they utilized these qualities and characteristics is the difference between a principal and a leader. I still believe principals are strong leaders, role models, managers and I am adding the role of a coach to what I believe makes a good leader.

To build on this the in Lead with Me (Moller & Pankake 2006) discuss Shared Vision and they state that “a school vision involves everyone,” and I have to agree, I know that when my principal involved the faculty and staff in the school vision there was more buy -in because we all felt part of the school, we felt we actually had a say in what we wanted our school to look like, to accomplish. When we were instrumental in creating the school vision it was easier to understand and as teachers who are the ones closest to the students if just made sense. Establishing a strong school community is also I important if a school is to be successful and again I always felt this was the responsibility of the principal until I read in The Principalship: A Reflective Practice Perceptive about the three forms of Gemeinschaft: community of relationships, mind, and place, and realized that yes it is the …show more content…
Observing these behaviors has made me more attentive to not only the students that were in my class but all students in the school. It is this kind of role model that has made me more compassionate and attentive toward not only the students but all members of the faculty and staff.
