Other societies have this same mindset on sex before marriage, yet they do not usually take it as far as Cambodians do. A girl is shammed by essentially everyone in her community both inside or outside of her family. Once a girl has lost her virginity, she usually ends up in prostitution because men want to marry a virgin and she feels as if there is nothing else she can do to make a living.
Moving forward, sex workers or prostitution takes place because a girl can be seen as a commodity if she has already lost her virginity, meaning the ability to sell sex for money. As stated in the film, brothels only account for 30% of the sex industry in Cambodia so most of it is in indirect ways such as the use of a front like karaoke, massage, or beer selling establishment (“Cambodia: The Virginity Trade”, 2008). Girls who get jobs in these fronts do not always do them to have sex. Yet in order to pay for their daily expenses, they oftentimes find themselves having to resort to
