It seems more and more people are spending more and more time looking down at their phones than looking each other in the eye. You can 't walk into a room without seeing someone with a smart phone in their hand. They are staring at it, sharing a message with their friends or taking a picture. Even though we may be right next to someone, we feel the need to communicate with others not in the room. In today 's electronic age, texting, sending and receiving messages and images is the way we talk to each other, especially for young adults. Although it is a good way to instantly connect with someone, there are dangers with excessive use. Young people are just coming into their sexuality and they are learning to build relationships. Samsung made and released one in Korea in June 2000 that housed a small camera in the phone as separate units and you had to connect it to your computer to get the photos. But in November 2000 Sharp released a phone in Japan, the J-Phone, that allowed the pictures to be sent electronically. But it wasn 't until 2002 that the United States picked up on the trend, and by 2004 camera phones were taking off (Hill, 2013). With ever improving technology, texting is the most commonly preferred way of interaction for young adults in romantic relationships. In a positive way it can act as "a social and emotional pick-me-up, to remind both parties that someone is thinking of them (Winklelman et al., 2014). But too many people rely on electronic messages and don 't develop important face to face conversation skills. Body language and vocal tones are missing, so text messages are left for the receiver to interpret correctly. In the textbook Human Sexuality: Diversity in Contemporary America, the authors discuss sexting as the "creating, sharing and forwarding of sexually suggestive text and nude or nearly nude images to engage in activities relevant to sex and sexuality" (Yarber & Sayad, 2013, p.12). These texts and images are usually of oneself sent to someone the person knows. Because of the ease of sending messages electronically, kids feel braver and are more prone to write things they may not normally say in

In "Why Kids Sext," Hanna Rosin addresses the phenomenon of teen "sexting," a term which she attributes to the sending of nude photographs. This includes everything from willingly sending a photo of oneself, to sending a photo of someone else to a group of one's friends. Rosin states that this practice has been on the rise since around 2003 and that it became evident that it was a problem in 2009, with a scandal in Pensylvania. Since then, sexting has continued to be a serious issue in many high schools, and even some middle schools. Rosin attempts to explain why teens are partaking, and how it should be dealt with.…

Research suggests that young adults feel “sexting is a safe sex practice, sexting is risqué and that sexting is a cultural norm of sexually active couples” (Levine, 2013). However, sexting is not always a consensual sexual practice and can sometimes be used as a form of sexual abuse. Now minors can be charged for photographing, spreading, and owning child pornography for “sexting” nude photographs of themselves to other minors. According to page 185 of the book, Under current Washington law, any minor involved simply in consensual sexting with a person his or her own age faces felony charges, up to five years in prison, and mandatory sex offender registration. Child pornography laws were not intended to address sexting, the legal consequences…
