Norm Violations: Violation And Observations

Norm Violations: Violation and Observations When we witness someone violate a norm, we question their intent of doing so. Most of us believe that there are common/set guidelines, rules, and behaviors we should, and often times do, follow. The way we react to norm violations is subjective, it varies from person to person and can either be negative or positive. Through my own observations, and probably through many others, I noticed that people tend to react fairly similar. The feeling of having all eyes on you seems quite unnoticeable and the people who violated these norms, and myself, had to know we were doing something “wrong” or not “normal”. The first norm violation I witnessed was in a church setting. About ten minutes after I arrived …show more content…
I had to go there anyway to purchase a few items, so I decided to take my shoes off and walk around in my socks. During most of the time I was in there I was pushing the cart with one hand and holding my shoes with the fingers of my other hand. The main reaction I got from other people was just the staring. I was only in there for about fifteen minutes, but many people passed by me. Some of them didn’t really think anything of it and probably thought I was tired. Also, from far away I think people didn’t notice I didn’t have shoes on and a couple of them, once they passed by me, had a weird look on their face, but didn’t look at me too long. Another reason they probably didn’t think anything of it was because nowadays people come to grocery stores, or stores in general, not dressed presentable, maybe wearing pajamas and slippers. So, they probably thought I was one of those types of people. Most people at least have shoes on whether they are slippers or not, so that’s probably why I got the stares that I did get. The people that actually stared at me distastefully were the older people; most of the younger people didn’t really care. The younger people probably put themselves “in my shoes” (no pun intended) and probably wished they had the courage to do the same, while the older people probably were aggravated that I wasn’t following the “rules”. The entire time I was there no employees said anything to me; that was actually surprising but they probably didn’t say anything because I wasn’t in the store that long. All in all, after observing and personally violating a norm, I find it hard to believe that people don’t know they are violating norms. All eyes or on you/them and some people may make comments about you amongst one another. Violating a norm seems to make people distasteful towards you or they’ll think you’re weird because you are not doing what others would “normally” do or following

Breaking Social Norms In today’s world we are given a list of social norms we feel compelled to follow as a society. Social norms are the rules of behavior that are considered acceptable in a group or society (YourDictionary). Culture norms are rules set out by society to differ what is “normal” and what isn’t. There are three different types of norms: folkways, mores, and taboo. Violating a norm can result in receiving a negative sanction, reaction from the people. Society control what would be considered norms and can rage from the right way people should enter an elevator or the way people should eat. Negative sanctions also control society as to the punishment if a norm is broken.…

I performed this folkway violation on on 10/12/16, in the media center after school. Tommy nguyen was the one who observed the social experiment on wednesday when I went up to the group of teenagers in the media center. They completely ignored/ accepted it as normal and didn't even notice that I came up to them and started talking with them. I was so surprised at that because usually people are weirded out and or give you a nasty grin or mean look. This really shocked me that some people don’t care if they get interrupted.…

During my norm violation, my friend who is usually in a rush after class thought I was trying to race her outside. She jokingly mocked my motions for a while then continued to rush to her next class. Another friend that I usually walk with after class yelled at me from afar and asked what I was doing. Random strangers in the hall heard me breathing heavily while I was figuratively “running” and did either of the following: kindly step to the side to let me pass, ignored me and continued to leisurely walk, or pushed me to the side. In addition, I received many laughs and long looks of…

How people react towards someone who breaks an everyday society’s idea of a social norm can vary in many different ways all depending on the situation, the people surrounding the incident and who is breaking the norm. I, wearing pajamas in public setting such as the mall, my mother office, in my neighborhood and general popular places around town caused many to quite surprising reactions from my peers, family, strangers and friends. Sometimes people’s reactions are quite subtle and they tend not to show any interest in a change of action at all. However, at other times a person reaction to an alteration in the social norm can be quite large and exaggerated. This is because I have established a sense of comfort with the members of my family and I’m not scared to act differently around them. Also, my family members are used to my strange actions so it doesn’t faze them who I do something out of the ordinary. Another factor as to why I was comfortable violating this norm was because I am not judged by the members of my family in my daily life. Although, if I had broken this folkway in public, it would have been extremely uncomfortable. This is due to the fact that I am exhibiting abnormal behavior in front of complete strangers whom I am not completely comfortable…

In more simplistic terms it can be depicted as one’s ability to connect his or her own particular problems and relate them back to a more social level that others may have in common. The sociological imagination is a very interesting yet complex component in one’s life. It is a real eye opener. All societies are constructed of social norms. Norms dictate how we should play our roles, and lay out basic rules on how to interact with others. Without norms, a society would not have social order. A society must have customary social arrangements in order to function properly. A society naturally develops a system of social control in order to enforce these social norms, both formally and informally.…
