Every day, without words, communication can occur unconsciously. Facial expressions, body language, non-vocal sounds, and hand gestures are some of the ways we communicate. Nonverbal communication is rule-guided (Wood, 136). And consequently, violations occur. Sunglasses may symbolize to some, especially when not used as a functional device, arrogance, distrust, or a lack of interest. It may not be the intent. Also, nonverbal communication reflects culture (Wood, 136). Accordingly, when making a judgment, the cultural or socioeconomic differences must be considered. For instance, a construction worker walking into a job trailer wearing safety sunglasses and not removing them is quite different compared to a financial consultant behind a mahogany desk in sunglasses. Additionally, without realizing the impact, this nonverbal communication may replace the verbal communication. The perceived lack of interest may preclude further interaction.
