The villain of the story is Tom Chaney a man with out grit. Once in Fort Smith, he shoot and kill Frank Ross,who was unarm, for not reason. Then he steals Ross, as Mattie said ”Chaney took my father’s purse from his warm body and ripped open the trouser band and took the gold …struck the night watchman at the stock barn … he put a bridle on Papa’s horse Judy and rode out bareback”. “The wicked flee when none +pursueth” (Portis 16-17). His actions show his lack of grit. The next time Mattie hear another crime that Chaney committed was from LaBoeuf, a Texas Ranger, told Mattie that Chaney real name was Theron Chelmsford and had kill a dog and a senator. He said “He killed a state senator named Bibbs down in Waco, Texas” (Portis 73). He did the same thing kill and run away. LaBoeuf ride along with Rooster and Mattie to hunt Chaney. Mattie says “ That was his cur nature, to change from a whining baby to vicious bully as circumstances permitted “ (Portis 180). Another of his characteristics, change from week to villain. Chaney was not alone, Ned Pepper was there too, soon there were some argument, shooting and the bandits left leaving Mattie with Chaney. Soon he struck her, he was about to kill her when Rooster and LaBoeuf show up. LaBoeuf, Chaney and Mattie where trying to go down, skirting closed to a pit. At the time the bandits came back and again the shooting. Chaney took the chance and hit LaBoeuf with a rock and make him fall. Mattie shot Chaney in the head, the kick send Mattie to the pit. She believes Chaney was dead, but he was alive, and closed to the pit. As she ask him for help “Trow me a rope, Tom! You cannot be enough to leave me!” He said “You say you don't like it?” (Portis 210). As he used to do, take advantage of the weak. At the time Rooster shot the villain, a man with out grit.
