The Vietnam War: The Fall Of Saigon

Decent Essays
The fall of Saigon began in a battle in Banmethuot on March-11, the Southern anchor of Saigon’s defense in the central highlands. Facing the prospect of an imminent shut-down of US military aid, President Nguyen-Van-Thieu of South Vietnam, gave orders to abandon Banmethuot. All South Vietnamese forces would withdraw to coastal cities, using an abandoned logging road which had no bridges and no ferries.
That was the worse military strategy of a long war, and would caused a military and political chain reaction that would triggered waves of panic across South Vietnam.
The South Vietnamese forces finally withdrew to Saigon, but took heavy losses and could not hold the line.
Within weeks, big cities of Vietnam were captured one by one by the communist.

One of the first escalations towards the Vietnam War was when the Viet Cong attacked a United States base killing 8 soldiers and wounding another hundred. Johnson delayed making a major decision on Vietnam while his consultants discussed what to do next. The advisors, including the Assistant Secretary of State William Bundy and the Joint Chiefs of Staff recommended a bombing the North Vietnam in order to separate the networks between them and the Viet Cong. This bombing would come in 3 stages and would be called Operation Rolling Thunder. Rolling Thunder lasted from March 2, 1965 to November 1, 1968 during which a great deal of bombs were dropped on North Vietnam.…

It was also difficult to tell who was friend and who was foe. Nothing distinguished a North Vietnamese soldier from a South Vietnamese soldier physically. So it was almost impossible to tell who was a friend and who was an enemy. The U.S. did not as a matter of course lose the war in Vietnam as much as they neglected to win this war. They didn't oust socialism, which was the point, as displayed to people in general, thus hauling out or 'not winning are compared with losing the war, which in fact is not valid (Merrill, Paterson 425).…

The message each author is trying to convey is that this war, and specifically the fall of Saigon and what was happening at that time was terrifying. For example, “avoiding the obvious escape path...where the Communists are dropping all the bombs they have left”(Lai 67) and “Mother is sick...barely creeps along”(Lai 67). From this and the rest of the poem Saigon Is Gone, we can infer that Ha and her family are standing on this gigantic crowded navy ship terrified that they are going to get bombs dropped on them, just imagine the madness, terror, and chaos going through their minds at this moment. The words and phrases the author uses like dropping all the bombs they have left, creeps along, it’s over, and Saigon is gone help us to visualize…

Another reason the American strategy has failed in Vietnam is the use of napalm bombs and Agent Orange. During the war between 1965-1972, U.S troops used a substance known as napalm. The Vietnam war was a fight between North Vietnam and South Vietnam, or rather the United States fighting communism. In the midst of the Cold War, North Vietnam wanted the country to become communist. However, America was completely against this idea and backed South Vietnam for democracy. Communist rebels who lived in the South, who called themselves Viet Cong, used the hit and run tactic and their knowledge of the jungle they lived in. The North helped these rebels set mines and booby traps, and create networks of secret supply routes.…
