The Vietnam Conflict
The Vietnam War, also known as the second Indochina war was fought between the years of 1954 and 1973. Although the American involvement was not as concentrated until 1963. The record for longest war in American history to this day goes to the Vietnam, but the story doesn’t start when America stepped in, it goes way beyond that.
Before either of the Indochina wars, Vietnam was a French Colony. The French maintained strong control of Vietnam until the Japanese invaded during the Second World War. After the Japanese left at the end of the war and the French tried to reestablish their leadership, but the Vietnamese refused to be put back under the French rule so they rebelled again them. The NVA (North Vietnamese Army) was led by Ho Chi Minh, and because the French would not take no for an answer they fought the NVA and were defeated at the battle of Dien Bien Phu in 1953. On July 21, 1954, France declared that Cambodia and Laos would become independent nations and that Vietnam would be split at the 17th parallel into North Vietnam and South Vietnam. (, Vietnam-war)
Ho Chi Minh was placed in charge of North Vietnam, and Emperor Bao Dio was placed in charge of the newly independent South Vietnam. Soon Bao Dio was replaced by Ngo Dinh Diem.
