It was only about a five minute walk though. On the way to work the rest of our squadron informed us that they had seen us trying to surf and thought in was the funniest thing they had every seen. Mike and I were quite embarrassed and quickly tried to change the subject, but they could not get over how entertaining we had been. Thankfully they quit talking about before arrived at the base, the last thing we needed was everybody at the base hearing about our surfing experience. When we arrived at base, we were told that our flight to Vietnam had been cancelled do to bad weather, and we would not be flying to Vietnam until the next day. At 5:00 a.m. the next day we were already at the base and suiting up for the flight to Vietnam. The flight would take about twenty-four hours. We would take off at 6:00 a.m. …show more content…

We had played a key role in keeping the enemy at bay when our numbers were falling short. We never took credit for what happened that day, but at the end of it, we all sat around and talked about how we just went through some crazy stuff together. It may seem odd but it was fun. It is what we train day and night to do… to be able to be experts in our weapon systems and to engage and close with the enemy. Arguably more influential to U.S. policymakers than the fear of monolithic communism was the belief that “loss” of Vietnam would result in severe domestic backlash. This conclusion was drawn as a result of the domestic response to President Truman’s perceived “loss” of China. In the domestic sphere, both politically and publicly, Truman was vilified for being weak on communism and jeopardizing the safety of the United States as well as its allies. The Republican Party exploited these criticisms a great deal, gaining political capital by using the loss of China to strip the Democratic Party of any legitimacy in areas concerning national security. Ultimately, when examining the situation in Vietnam, the Johnson Administration could not help but…

In August of 1964, North Vietnamese ships fired at US ships located in the Gulf of Tonkin, off the coast of North Vietnam. President Johnson called on Congress to take action, who instructed Johnson to "take all necessary measures" to stop the North Vietnamese, but Johnson promised a “limited and fitting response.” Johnson started Operation Rolling Thunder which was an intense bombing over North Vietnam and sent US troops for combat. Soon America fell into “mission creep,” an involvement in the war greater than expected. The conflicts of the Vietnam War came back home once America became involved.…

Vietnam has been through some tough times and has shown their perseverance throughout. This has been proven as early as 208 B.C. where the Chinese came and started a, “ warrior tradition” in the country. The Vietnamese struggled for over 1600 years to push their Chinese occupiers out, which shows how strong willed they are. Next came the French, who made false claims of them, “saving the souls of the non Catholics” but later turned into a full on invasion by the French.…
