How We Organize Knowledge

Great Essays
The video on “How We Organize Knowledge” was not only interesting, but I also think that it is very useful knowledge to teaching in the classroom. I liked how it was focused on letting the student organize the knowledge for them self. As a teacher, we are to set up the “investigation” for them, but allow them to find the knowledge for themself. I think that the first teacher that had a very good point when they said that it was important for the student to make their own errors while experimenting so that they will learn from them. It is easier for the student to learn from their own experimentation and errors than just having it told to them. Another important point that was mentioned was that it was important for students to hear how other …show more content…
I like the analogy of the brain as plastic with brain plasticity and how a memory can help shape it, and it will keep its shape. It is useful in thinking about memory as a “network of associations,” and memories are connected with other familiar things. This is why it is important as an educator to try to like lessons to things that our students can associate with so they will have a better understanding. One thing that I really didn’t know about that the video went over was how the brain processes language on the left side of the brain, and that the hearing, reading, understanding, and output of language are all connected. Through this process, it is easier to see how there can be disconnections if one of the parts is having trouble. The importance of sleep in making sense of the information throughout the day was also …show more content…
This system can be very useful in helping students remember lessons, and can also help teachers remember things as well, like learning the name of students quickly. There were different methods of mnemonics that the chapter went over. There is the loci method, which can help by associating things to a familiar place in where they will be remembered by thinking of that place. Another is the acronym method, which makes a word in which each letter is associated to a different word. There is also chain mnemonics, where the first thing is associated to second thing and then the third and so on. The last one that was gone over is the keyword method which associates something with n image or concepts or words that sound the same. All of these methods deal with association, and as a future teacher, we want to have our students associate lessons to something that is meaningful to them so that they will remember it. One difficulty is making sure that the associates are useful to them because what may be an easy association to us, may not be for that particular

    1) Describe one mnemonic device and give an example of how it might be used. The method of Loci is when you use images to help recall information from memory. This method uses location and landmarks to be able to recall certain things. For example I use this when needing to remember where certain things are. I visualize a house and if I need to remember where my keys are, I remember everything that I may touch on my daily routine.…

In the first video, the teacher talks about how it is important it is to start teaching children how to use critical thinking, and how to promote creative thinking and questioning. She uses a box of objects linked to the lesson, and has the students inquire why those particular items are in the box. For the lesson to be effective, the teacher uses content relevant to the children to help them understand the concept of a thing versus an idea. I think one of the most important things she discusses in the video is the idea of cognitive space. Waiting for the students to have an idea or an answer to make sure they understand the lesson.…

While both writings of “ Master Harold” ...and the boys, and Elie Wiesel’s Nobel Lecture included hope, despair ,and memory , it came clear to me that this was true. “Master Harold” and the boys had despair when it came up between Hally and Sam . Hally became unfair and rude towards Sam , when all Sam was doing was speaking the truth. Although Hally had troubles in his family, but he did not have to take it out on Sam. Elie Wiesel’s Nobel Lecture talks about how memory is a gift and how you must use it.…

Steven Johnson communicates the useful components of computer games and TV and the way that they depend on their arrangement. I thought that it was intriguing in light of the fact that players in computer games truly make sense of complex storylines and piece puzzles together which they're receiving an "Intellectual exercise” that teaches them the same skills that math problems and board games grant. It doesn't really strike me because I learned this from my brother. At a very young age he played video games and presently still does, he's learned numerous technological developments from them, he’s beat every storyline he's ever entered, and learned how to destroy a few zombies on the way. If he's ever put into a situation, his brain will remember how to tackle the problem hands on and surprisingly he can solve probably any math problem he's given.…

I loved the way Mr. Hossack conducted this particular lesson because of the way the students took responsibility for their own learning! The way he guided them through a complex process was brilliant. Desired Results-- learning objectives: Mr. Hossack not only posted the class objectives on the board, he discussed them with the class and made sure they understood the vocabulary used in the objective as well as what learning outcome to expect. The students were clearly accustomed to discussing the objectives before beginning the activities. Assessment Evidence Mr. Hossack used both formal and informal methods of assessment.…

While planning and working on my PSA I decided I want to address an issue that happens frequently especially to people in my generation and that is Texting While Driving. Something is see everyday and hear it and the fatal accidents it causes. And I felt like people specially teengers need to realise the risk of texting while driving. I tried to appeal to the audience’s pathos, using music related to the issue and short video that can make the audience see the issue from a different point of view. The one statistic that stood to me while making this project was that Texting while driving is 6 times more likely to cause an accident than driving drunk.…

In High School I rarely studied and instead just remembered information as I took the test and I would usually get an A or a B though I usually prepare myself for tests I am never afraid of tests as a result. Life events are a bit complicated as I do not remember a lot of events in detail but the ones I do remember I am able to deeply analyze the memory. I am able to figure out dates of memories by comparing the memory to what was on my mind for example homework or just general stress. Making the connection between what was bothering me I can remember the dates of certain events.…

The ten given tips mentioned in the video all seemed to be very effective ones to implement in the classroom if done correctly. Classroom management is crucial, and can definitely make a difference in-between a well ran room and a chaotic classroom. The first tip mentioned was beginning the year tough. I definitely believe teachers have to set the stage of what is expected and stand their ground to instill the procedures and expectations into the students, but this should also not be taken to extreme measures where students are uncomfortable or scared to be in the class. Also, it’s easier for the teacher to set certain procedures such as bathroom signals, attention grabbers, or classroom rules at the beginning of the year so the students know…
