Argumentative Essay On The Role Of Video Games In Education

Video games and education are connected in more ways than ever before. This current generation is the most technologically influenced generation to date and the way these children receive information best has changed. A study by Iowa State University shows that 64 million kids between the ages of 2 and 17 play videogames (Reisinger ST.). In school, children no longer can relate to examples about farmer life or playing outside with their friends. With the changing times, teaching styles and teachers’ curriculums need to change as well. Simply put, it is no longer a matter of if teachers should incorporate video games, but how can they do it in an effective and appropriate way.

In saying this, it is not to be conveyed that teachers need to not teach, but more that teachers need to change their style of teaching.
There will never be a substitute for a good teacher; a teacher that knows how to relate to their student, but still implants fear in them and gets respect in return. “As former U.S. Secretary of
Education Terrell H. Bell once remarked, ‘There are three important things to remember about education. The first one is motivation, the second is motivation, and the third is motivation”’
(Bell Qtd. In Lim.) But students are drastically changing; they are on a different frequency than the teachers, and the two need to become attuned. The classroom needs to become more interactive and engaging for students to get the best possible outcome. This can be done by installing game systems such as computers, Xboxes or Nintendo Wiis. Video games on the market are no longer all about shooting up some Nazi villain; these games have elaborate story lines, helpful learning tricks and are still a joy to play.
However, computers or game systems are expensive. Cost is the biggest step

How are the schools in Sweden incorporating Minecraft? In their English classes, for instance, when learning about William Shakespeare’s Globe Theater, to give the students a more tangible and first person feel of what it was like to walk around the Globe, the assignment was given for students to create their own replica of the Theater with the appropriate aspects to scale in the game. This assignment has many applications; for instance, in a game were blocks (cubes) are your only means of building, how would you construct a circular building? Many challenges much like that one had to be overcome in their endeavor for the perfect digital replica Globe Theater.
In Minecraft you can explore and easily get off topic. There is a whole “mine” and
“craft” part of Minecraft, were you can build a pick axe and mine down to collect resources such as iron and craft strong iron and tools, that makes it a lot less classroom applicable than other purely learning games. However, I have had teachers not allow me to do building projects in
Minecraft, for the fact that they do not know of its good applications. If the students are

The American Education System is considered to be ranked 36th in the world wide ranks of education systems as of 2013 (Coleman). This ranking indicates that there is a major problem with the American Education System. Though many people believe that reform must come in the form of larger budgets this is not the case, money actually does not have a direct link with student performance (Robinson). The reform for the American Education System needs to come in the form of teachers with more will and want to help, focusing on the true needs of students and shifting the focus from testing to real learning. From the start, teachers have had one of the biggest impacts on a student’s education experience.…

Curiosity is the wick in the candle of learning. In the article, “The Case for Curiosity,” Senior Lecturer Susan Engel, discussed the idea of children and older students having curiosity about other topics than what is being lectured in everyday class. Showing the percentage of those wishing to speak out from their imagination, however, it appears that many individuals in the article do not have the motive to give because of the American Public Education System being too focused on what needs to be taught, and to seek nothing else. The American Public Education System primarily discourages curiosity in a few certain factors. Making students stay focused only on the topic, teaching students to speak up and participate, observing how students…

Since around 1991, the thought of reforming America’s education system has invaded an immense amount of citizens’ minds. Many believe that the academic program we all know as the norm should make a change, such as XQ America, and their Super School campaign. XQ was co-founded by Russlynn Ali and Laurene Powell Jobs, wife of Steve Jobs. While XQ America focuses on the improvement of high school, I personally believe the education system as a whole should be reconsidered. As an aspiring teacher, I believe I can reform America’s schooling method in various ways, such as ensuring I teach effectively and incorporating STEM techniques.…

Video games are helpful with enhancing cognitive skills and they actively teach problem-solving and creative ways of thinking that can be used in everyday life. They are motivating and goal-oriented, and they can be designed in so many different ways and be geared toward all different kinds of subjects and materials. If a video game is complex and difficult and requires so much time and effort to beat it, why do children still play them? Because they enjoy playing and being challenged, and because they are driven by the goal of beating the game, which makes all their time and effort worth it. The education system needs to look at how they can incorporate educational video games into schools to help encourage children to learn. The rest of the world is all about technology, and it is time for schools and learning environments to get up to speed so that students can learn in the same ways they experience life outside of a classroom; surrounded by technology and…
