The Vedas: Education Confers Humility

Great Essays
The Vedas declare: “Education confers humility." The word wisdom raises many questions. The Oxford dictionary, for example, defines wisdom as the ability to make sensible decisions and give good advice because of the experience and knowledge that you have.1 But, in my opinion, these definitions are not adequate. Wisdom is not merely the experience of knowledge. It is the experience one obtains from knowledge. So some may ask questions like, “How is wisdom attained?”In my opinion, no one can attain wisdom as such. One can only experience its taste and sensation. The word knowledge has several connotations: knowledge is awareness; it means understanding; it is the ability to correlate. However, knowledge is like a knife. It can be used for a …show more content…
Science and technology is just an example of how knowledge in good hands creates benefits, and in wrong hands, wreck havoc. But as science and technology flourished, its focus slowly shifted from common good to individual benefits. It became a tool in the hands of those in power. It was snatched from the hands of simple seekers of knowledge; one such seeker of knowledge said, “Being ignorant is not so much a shame as being unwilling to learn."2 The educational institutions are responsible for imparting & disseminating knowledge, moulding young minds, and preparing them for the diverse walks of life. What then must be the goal of the educational system? Obviously it is to fulfil its role in a manner that the individual, the society, the nation and the world benefits at large and progresses forward. But, they are far from marching towards this goal of moulding students with unclouded vision and noble motives; the educational system, currently, is in an unholy mess. It is riddled with corruption, driven by greed and administrated with utterly inferior motives. This, however, is only a general view. …show more content…
What lies behind this is greed and a business-like attitude. The money power has influenced and corrupted the system, taking control over teachers and students. It has also taken control over the way education is imparted. It has changed the motto of the system from “knowledge at the end of the day” to “money at the end of the day”. This, in turn, has instilled greed and a mercenary attitude in teachers. The teacher's focus, now, has shifted to the ubiquitous task of satiating the never ending demand of the administrators’ greed; in turn, satiating theirs too. The last and the most potent evil that pervades the system is the absence of values in educating process that has reduced the quality of education. The concepts Quality of education and Quality education are totally different. Quality education is the standard education integrated with noble virtues; whereas, the quality of education is a measure of its richness. Education without quality is useless. Knowledge not obtained from quality education makes an individual imbalanced. Science and technology in the hands of such individual becomes a tool for destruction.

“Both theoretical and practical wisdom are necessarily desirable in themselves…for each one of them is the virtue of a different part of the soul” (1144a1-3), meaning that there is a need for both wisdoms and that they themselves are good. Aristotle states that “theoretical wisdom produces happiness, not as medicine produces health, but as health itself makes a person healthy” (1144a3). Medicine only tries to mimic health, but health is good within itself and is universal. Both practical and theoretical wisdom is needed side by side in order to reach happiness and virtue. Practical wisdom allows humans to do the vitreous action and theoretical wisdom must understand what the good is and that we are preforming that particular action in order to achieve the…

The types of relationships Rodriguez had with his teachers, family and peers were heavily affected by specific methods of education going on in that period. Freire in “The ‘Banking’ Concept of Education” argues how classrooms in today’s society are not equally fair.…

Education serves as a constituent upon which we construct ourselves as a society politically, socially and economically. However, the extent of a good education varies depending on one’s circumstantial influences. Students often find themselves accepting a romanticized outlook on what they are told defines a good education. In the classroom, pupils find themselves blindly memorizing formulas, reciting phrases and mind jotting dates and times to no avail. A good education comprises an ongoing conversation between student and teacher wherein a desire is incited to explore creative avenues with the informational foundation provided.…

Amanda Ripley’s book The Smartest Kids in the World explains that dysfunctional education systems in many countries can be blamed on lack of proper discipline, which demonstrates in the film “The Class” by Laurent Cantet. A classroom consists of both teachers and students that even if one side does not participate or disturbs the class, the achievement and performance of both the teachers and the students are likely to be poor. The students’ inappropriate behaviors and languages in class, inattentive attitude on the importance of education, and teachers’ inability on teaching classes efficiently all prove that without certain practical rules or standards applied, low performance becomes common and even worsens if a change in discipline policy…

Balancing the needs and desires of the individual, with the needs and attitudes of any society will always be a difficult task, and such conflict is clearly evident in the field of education. As argued by many academics, the defining of primary purposes of education requires dynamic flexibility between these conflicting perspectives and the plentiful opinions held by different people with different positions in society. Educational purposes can be divided into those that are individualistic and those that suit the goals of society. Dependency between such purposes is apparent with individual aims needing to be achieved in order for certain social aims to be accomplished too (Merseth, US-World 35 lecture, Sept 18, 2014). However, as exploration…

Throughout history, education has always played an important role in people’s lives. Education, or lack thereof, in many ways, shapes a person’s life and what they will become in society. Many people have argued over time on what the best form of education is and how it should be implemented. Harry Brighouse, in his book On Education, offers an argument that the central purpose of education should be to promote the flourishing of humans. While Brighouse does present a unique idea as to what the central purpose of education should be, his argument is impractical and not without its pitfalls.…

Education is such an essential and fundamental element in our lives. Throughout education, we acquire knowledge, learn what people before us have discovered or written and undoubtedly carve our own thinking the way we have been thought. In the article "Education", Ralph Waldo Emerson, a renowned lecturer and visionary thinker, expresses how education that is being adopted in our civilization does more harm than good for the students. He builds up this claim by first presenting a paradox connecting "Genius and Drill", in which one cannot function without the other.…

“What Does it Mean to Be Well-Educated,” an article from Principal Leadership on March 2003 by Alfie Kohn. He argues that our education system can improve but first our mindset must change on what it means to be educated. He uses his wife as an example her Alma Mater is Harvard University, an IV university, she is a highly intelligent physician but had poor grammar and very poor mathematical skills. First, he asks that we understand the purpose of an education. His view is that education is supposed to help us be better people.…

According to the "The Banking Concept of Education" by Paulo Freire, I believe that Freire does a good job of showing the reader his idea about education. He makes the reader think about him/herself by the way he shows the fact obvious in their life. He hopes the reader know the depth of difference between the banking system and the problem-posing system. Therefore, this essay is talking about learning can only be achieved by communication with others and such type of learning cannot be achieved through the banking concept. He describes, “Education thus becomes an act of depositing, in which the students are the depositories and the teacher is the depositor”…
