Importance Of Values In My Life

The values that resonate in my life are showing kindness, honesty, dignity, respect, hard work, dedication, being compassionate and valuing relationships. These values are embedded subconsciously through observing my grandparents, family, and friends. I spent 23 years of my life living with my parents and grandparents. My grandparents hailed to Mumbai from rural part of Maharashtra (state in India). My grandfather was a teacher and moved to Mumbai (India)to provide better opportunities for his children and brothers Growing up, even though my grandparents’ house was small, their hearts were big. My grandmother cooked for 40-50 people without a sigh. I feel connected and compassionate when I work with older adults as they remind me of my …show more content…
The impact of socioeconomic status on accessibility to health care, lifestyle, occupations, and basic amenities (food and shelter) is huge. I was born into a Hindu-Shimpi family; we are considered as lower caste in the Indian society. Since childhood, I was taught to be frugal and share with others. As a young girl, I was always fascinated by Barbie dolls and I wished I could have a Barbie doll like some of my other friends. My father used to work 12 hours shift to pay for my brother and my tuition. While my mother cooked, took care of us and my ailing grandparents. The middle class values of sharing, being frugal, honesty, being ambitious and aspire for a better life has been the driving force in my life. My father believed that through hard work we can achieve higher accomplishments. Had my parents not saved every single penny; I wouldn’t be able to get the best …show more content…
I had an experience working with a non-profit organization for homeless children in India. My heart would ache to observe these kids begging on the streets for food and money. Some of these kids never had an opportunity to go to a school or receive basic education. I worked closely with the educators and social worker to enroll these kids at a local school and provide housing at a local orphanage. Furthermore, my role as an occupational therapist was to assess these kids for learning disability, post-traumatic stress disorder, mental and/or physical disability, and provide interventions to help them succeed in their life. Some of these children had been through physical abuse resulting in head injury or difficulty walking due to broken bones. I provided therapy intervention to help them with walking using a mobility device or cognitive interventions to address impaired attention, sequencing, and memory. Most instances, these children would feel socially isolated and anxious. The social worker and myself would collaborate to provide training on life skills, social training and emotional support to these children. In my experience of working with these underprivileged children and looking at their happy smiling faces even in the worst of the situation has instilled a sense of resilience and positive attitude towards life. I aim to be optimist and positive

For my sixty hours of volunteer work I decided to volunteer at a Child Life Center which was in a poverty stricken area in Norfolk, Va. At the child life center my job as a volunteer was to assist the children with their homework, help the staff monitor the children on local field trips, as well as serve as a positive role model for the children. The experience I had at Park Place Child Life Center was one I will honestly never forget. Although I didn’t get any actual counseling experience, I was able to learn the ways that the non-profit organization received their funding, I was able to gain experience in working with the youth, and I was also able to make a positive impact on the lives of children who were considered “at-risk youth”. To go there every day and be able to see the change the children had in their behaviors and how much just some attention and affection from adults impacted their behaviors was honestly amazing.…

I really love working serving kids, and I am really passionate about it. In India, I went to this home for orphaned kids. I helped raise some money with a group, and we donated it to the kids for their education. I also took part in this volunteer group project, which lasted about a week. We would go to the nearby lake, which was extremely polluted, and pick up the trash.…

As I glance around my surroundings atop a comfortable bed, I observe a desk equipped with a computer, a drawing desk ladened with paper, and a lamp upon a bedside table. I get up off of my bed and leave my bedroom to find four other family members, my parents and two younger siblings. I can but help to feel that I am extraordinarily gifted and privileged to be given all that I have. Throughout the world there are injustices, unmet needs, and sufferings that happen everyday of which I have never had to experience. I have always been known as being that person who has always been intact and has never shown a single ounce of weakness, because people view me this way, they think I am unbreakable, and that nothing in the world can wound me. I have always been that person that people turn to when they are stuck in a bottomless pit and cannot find a way to get out, because of this, I have always had an interest in being there for those who need a shoulder to accompany them. Since I was very young, I always clung to the passion of being at the side of others who were struggling, and were in desperate need of help. I played with baby dolls until I was ten years old, I would bathe them, I would change them, I would feed them, I would take them out for walks, and I treated them as if the plastic baby actually contained a human heart.…

Prompt #1 Describe the world you come from — for example, your family, community or school — and tell us how your world has shaped your dreams and aspirations. The world I've learned to know is the life in City Heights, though this is not the world I came from. The world I came from compared to the world I have now is a tremendous change. As people think about City Heights, they think about the good things, whether it's the beaches, the diversity, or the beautiful weather. Although if you think about the world my family was raised in, Southern Sudan, the only thing that comes to mind is the war that has been continuing for decades, the death of innocent people, and the hunger and thirst seen throughout the country.…

A quote from the textbook this week I have selected is: Values are the deeply held convictions that influence your thinking when you are faced with choices. (Sukiennik 37)I choose this quote because, I believe that people deal with this on a daily bases. Like advertising, its set up by a corporation and their values to influence the person to buy their product. For example a beauty product can alter a person's opinion about themselves give the people a choice over a cheap imitation product or a product that will last but more expensive. But in reality it all depends on a person values on their decision on making that choice whether they want to buy an expensive product that may cost them 50 dollars or buy cheap imitation that will cost 10 dollars but, doesn't last that long.…

An individual’s values are the make-up of who they are as a human. Values are what you believe in either through your upbringing, cultural preferences or social environments. Items as simple as deciding to snooze the alarm, who to work for or what restaurants to eat at are all influenced by an individual’s values, even down to how we make the choices we do. Our values are what defines and drives our actions and behaviors.
