Eulogy Virtue Analysis

According to David Brooks, a New York Times columnist, there are two sets of virtues: the résumé virtues and the eulogy virtues. The résumé virtues are, as he explains them, “the skills you bring to the marketplace” and the eulogy virtues are “the ones that are talked about at your funeral — whether you were kind, brave, honest or faithful.” (Brooks). Both are important to have and as an incoming freshman, I hope to develop these virtues during my next four years at La Salle University. I expect to acquire multiple résumé and eulogy virtues by getting involved at La Salle as well as learn how either set of virtues might help me to understand complex current events such as the issues of race in places like Baltimore and Ferguson.

The résumé virtues I hope to obtain will help me understand the issues in Baltimore and Ferguson because my ambition and my diligence will help me realize that the people of these two cities have been subjected to racism and, especially in Baltimore, gentrification which caused generations of poverty in certain African American communities. Ambition and diligence help me understand this current issue because the rioters in Baltimore and Ferguson have the same virtues and are using them to make their voices heard. They realize that it takes great determination and persistence to achieve a goal and in their case their goal is to stop racism and discrimination. To add on, the eulogy virtues I desire can also help me understand this difficult topic. Integrity can help me understand this because it will allow me to honor their actions and comprehend the justification in their actions. Humility can help me understand because with humility, I know that everyone is created equally. Humility would also help me think about how this current event affects others instead of myself. In conclusion, I hope to gain both résumé and eulogy virtues throughout my next four years while using these virtues to understand complex current

As a student at Episcopal High School, I do my best to exhibit moral character, leadership, and service. In the classroom, I always maintain a mutual respect with my classmates and teachers. Since my freshman year I have served in the Student Senate and learned about the responsibility and leadership one must uphold in the organization. More recently, I was admitted into the Spanish National Honors Society and as an acolyte. Being an acolyte has taught me the accountability of serving as an example for others during the chapel processions.…

Scholarship, leadership, character, and service has shaped me to the person I am today. Today, I am involved in my community, top ten student, and a leader in my school. Although, this would have occurred without the four pillars of National Honor Society. As a child, I wanted to be a member of the National Honor Society but it was only a dream. Shortly after I had imagined myself as a member, my parents had passed away in a car accident.…

The four pillars of National Honor Society- scholarship, leadership, service, and character- have almost solely shaped my development. I pride myself in being true to all four of these pillars, in both my daily life, as well as who I am overall. I feel as if each of these virtues represents a fourth of who I hope I am; someone who values learning, is a fair leader, dedicates herself to her community, and leads a moral life. My high school career has been stressful because it is an immense amount of work to excel in each of these categories, but I couldn't be happier with where that work has put me. I am proud to be the person I am today.…

    Virtue Ethics In Sports

Virtue ethics analyzes the general characteristics of the individual and whether or not the action is moral. Virtue ethics, for example, emphasizes both benevolence as well as honesty, and if one could argue that the NFL players kneeling during the anthem indicates benevolent and honest traits, then the action would be considered ethical according to virtue ethics. However, it is unclear whether the actions by the players are purely motivated by the desire to help others. Other motivations, for example, could be the desire to gain spotlight and gain power, neither of which are virtuous behaviors. Furthermore, there has been widespread criticism that kneeling during the anthem is unpatriotic, which would also not be considered virtuous.…

Scholarship, service, leadership, and character are the characteristics that lay the foundation for success and are the reason why I perform at such a high degree in everything that I do. Although I’ve always had high ambitions for myself, the scholarship aspect of the National Honor Society confirms the importance of education and also reaffirms that anything is possible and it made easier with academic achievement. However, any achievement, academic or not, is meaningless to me if I don’t give back one way or another to the people who made my success possible including teachers, school staff members, fellow classmates, parents, and friends. On top of this, I learned that the smallest of gestures can make a big difference in someone’s life…

Romeo And Juliet Essay “Virtue is its own reward, and brings with it the truest and highest pleasure; but if we cultivate it only for pleasure 's sake, we are selfish, not religious, and will never gain the pleasure, because we can never have the virtue” (John Henry Newman) The theme of love as being blind is repeatedly discussed in Romeo and Juliet. It is shown through religious uses of imagery and their betrayal of their faith. Romeo compares Juliet to a saint as he kisses her hand, saying that he is unworthy to do so, and at several moments the duo declare their love as divined by God who he in return betrays by committing sin. These narrative choices leave behind many questions such as, what are the connection between their affair and the…

People have been fighting over the ethic of abortion in the past several decades. Different philosophical approaches have their own explanations. In this paper I shall defend one of Peter Singer’s consequentialism argument for abortion that it’s not wrong to kill a potential human being. Then, offer a deontological reply from Don Marquis’ point of view that killing is wrong because it deprives victims’ future life. Lastly, show how Rosalind Hursthouse using virtue ethics approach avoids the weakness of the two preceding traditional approaches about the argument, the uncertainty of the status of fetus and the intangibility of acting right or wrong.…

Dear Mr. Pathman, Thank you so much for taking the time to interview me last week. I was surprised by how much we had in common; not only did we both live on Collins third floor freshman year at Wake, but we also both have a passion for GI research! I appreciate you taking the time to tell me a bit about the medical school's housing system, and I hope that after our conversation, Hit the Bricks will be an event that will promote friendly competition between medical students while also benefitting the Brian Piccolo Cancer Foundation. In addition, it was a pleasure to discuss my love of music and some of the ways in which my world travels with the Philadelphia Boys Choir will impact me as a physician. Thank you again for your time, and…

The pillars of National Honor Society, Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character, have greatly influenced my goals and self-expectations. Throughout my academic career, I have been fortunate to grasp new concepts quickly without much effort. Despite how blessed I am to have this ability, I do not rely solely on its advantages. I enjoy fully understanding new concepts, not simply learning enough to achieve an A. Back in ancient Greece Aristotle theory of Virtue Ethics begged the question “what sort of person should I be?” (SL, 254) It’s no surprise this question still persists over two thousand years after his death. To this day Aristotelian virtue ethics remains prominent in ethical theories, all this time there have been objections to its theories but there must be something to these ancient ideas. Over the course of this paper I will explain virtue ethics as a whole and present an argument against virtue ethics and why virtue ethics has been able to withstand the opposing ideas.…
