In early July, the death of a civilian under the hands of the police in the U.S. occurred. Philando Castile, who was only 32 years old, was fatally shot by police officers from the passenger seat of his girlfriend’s car. According to an ABC News article by Julia Jacobo and Enjoli, the police officer planned to stop the vehicle Castile was in because he unethically assumed that Castile and the driver were robbers based on racial profiling (par. 4). After the officer killed Castile, the driver live-streamed the aftermath scene on her Facebook account and states that the officer assumed Castile was pulling out a gun instead of his wallet and shot him four times in the process. The book states that “the police personality is a constellation of traits that include danger, isolation (and thus alienation), authority and power, suspiciousness, conservatism, and a fiercely held solidarity with other officers” (DeLisi 130). The Texas officer accused of excessive force previously in the essay was dealing with a suicidal case earlier that day, something that patrol officers are not fully trained on handling, to which he responded to his next call nerves rattled, not knowing what to…

Stress is a part of everyone’s life and is also often a part of everyone’s job. For those in law enforcement, however, the stress is often more frequent and more intense. Officers often deal with the negative side of humanity and therefore face a lot of negative stress every day. In addition, the sometimes crazy work hours and shift changes as well as long periods of inactivity and boredom add additional stress. Add all of this together and throw it at a person on a daily basis, and the potential for health problems is quite high.…
