Lisa Wilson Strick begins her essay with a comment from her son, and a list of activities she does badly, to help set up her contrasting views on how seriously one's hobbies should be taken. Throughout her essay, she continues to point out how competitive people are nowadays while participating in activities that were once solely for leisure, and how in the past everything was much simpler. Her response to her son's criticism on how badly she plays the piano shows that she cares more about having fun rather than worrying over how well she is progressing in her hobbies. That is what Strick believes should truly matter, and is the basis of her thesis.…

I work in a school district and I believe that a school is the heart of the community. It is where we meet our neighbors, where our children make friends and families gather for school activities. It is about people. When you have a neighborhood that is struggling, you will also find the school is struggling. As I watched the video Building Expectations, Portrait of Lincoln High School there was definitely signs that this community was careworn.…

In all aspects of society, various themes that affect everyone in life exist. These themes include love, heartbreak, beauty, death, joy, and others. Literature often embodies these examples in ways that the audience can relate to, no matter the time period it is published in. Poems can express the themes of love and death better than many other forms of literature, as they tend to be shorter. Two poems, “My Mistress’ Eyes Are Nothing Like the Sun” and “Death, Be Not Proud,” are sonnets, with fourteen lines and a form of rhyming scheme known as iambic pentameter.…

Over the course of English 102, I have developed a new set of skills and learned to become a better writer. When I first came into English 102 I struggled with many different concepts of writing. During the semester in English 102, my writing became stronger because I learned how to incorporate evidence into my argument, do more thorough research, have smoother transitions, and have more organization throughout my essay. I learned how to peer review better and to take what others say and incorporate it into my essay. In the beginning, before English 102, I struggled with good organization and flow to an essay, sandwich evidence into paragraphs, and having strong arguments in persuasive essays.…

Throughout the entirety of this English 101 course, I have seen my skills as a writer grow. In the beginning of the school year, my writing fell short of my expectations, but as I continued to work and learn the principles of writing, I have written papers that I am proud to say are mine. Among the aspects of my writing I have improved, the best strives are seen within my my counter arguments and overall strength and coherency of my papers. To begin, when looking at a paper I wrote in August on necessity of first drafts, there were large gaps in my elaboration, bringing concerns as to whether I was arguing and proving a point or merely summarizing what Lamott, the author of the article, originally said. When attempting to argue my evidence, I stated,…
