Value Of Rewards Essay

The value of rewards such as trophies or metals varies in worth for different people. For the younger youth the value may be increasingly important and as for their parents it may be just another piece of plastic. Rewards could be given for participating in many different sports, plays, or even shows. Participating in an extracurricular activity is a good way to allow younger children to socialize and teach them the value of trophies until a certain age limit when they should start earning the trophies instead of receiving them for participation purposes.
Youth activities usually begin at varying ages. They can start from as young as 3 years old or even go into their late teenage years. No matter the circumstance all ages enjoy receiving awards

Mr. Miller says, “They deserve a reward because they have to overcome challenges that normally people do not face, showing up might be their hardest challenge some days.” Special needs children deserve the same treatment and reward process as the rest of the kids to allow them to feel included in the activity. As Ms.Benoit says, “They should get the same reward as all the other kids, if not it wouldn’t be fair.” Not all disabled children or older teens are able to participate in the same way a nondisabled child is, because of this reason it will never truly be fair for the child with normal capacities to receive equally based trophies. A nondisabled child has more ability to achieve above and beyond while a disabled child might have some certain complications that do not allow them to achieve anything other than regularity. Regularity to a handicapped child might be their above and beyond. By attempting to make it as fair as possible the presenter of the trophies should divide the rewards into two separate category systems. An achievement for the nondisabled child and an achievement for a disabled child, since their achievements could vary tremendously. By proposing these two categories it allows the presenter to not only award the best participates trophies but also allows the handicapped children to be recognized for their accomplishments being

On the topic of participation awards, Lisa Heffernan and Vivian Diller have both published articles advocating either for, or against rewarding children at a young age, regardless if they’ve won a game or not. In terms of making a strong argument, both writers used celebrity testimonies, life experience, and quotes from reputable sources, some tactics more effective than others. In Lisa Heffernan’s article favoring participation trophies, “In Defense of Participation Trophies: Why They Really do Teach the Right Values,” she often pulls from her most powerful and relevant source to her topic- her son. Statements such as “When my son was around eight years old … he scoffed at the very idea that such an award existed.” would play a critical role in setting up a counter argument, but much like her other quotations in her article, it was followed by a statement from Hillary L. Friedman, a sociologist, that initially seems to back up her son’s opinion.…

Corey Turner is not alone, people across the nation have debated this issue for as long as youth sports have been in existence. I believe that kids should not get trophies for participating because kids should learn life lessons from both wins and losses and participation trophies do more harm than good.…

Many people find themselves asking if participation trophies are even important or not, or if we should even have them in general. Well we should, for reasons that might have been overlooked. Participation trophies show a great significance consisting of commitment and dedication, they remind one of an experience or the friendships they made, and they give more meaning than you would think to a young child learning self-confidence. Commitment and and dedication show the growth of responsibility and a participation trophy shows just this. Richard Greenberg says this, “Participation trophies mark the fact that these kids kept a commitment and showed up to the games.”…

We as a society have come to believe that everybody should feel good at all times, and no one should be left out. We start with the youth and the "everybody gets a trophy" mentality. Sure, it makes you feel great to get rewarded for doing something great but after having a horrible season, a trophy just seems to add insult to injury. Now I'm not talking about the 6 year olds who come on to the field and give it their all for the fun of just playing a sport (score should not even be kept at this age, just let the little players find out if they even like the game), but when 13 and 14 year olds expect a trophy for showing up, I draw the line and I believe rightfully so.…
