“Friendship is one of the most satisfying things in the world.” (White, 1952) Wilbur is thinking this quote when he reflects on how happy he is with the friends he has made. Creating friendships take time, dedication, and may be difficult, however, Wilbur was fortunate and made friends who made sacrifices to keep him alive. Charlotte’s Web, written by E.B. White, is a novel that starts out about a pig named Wilbur that is in trouble of getting slaughtered because he is the runt. A little girl named Fern saves his life and the pig is sold to a local farm, however then he is in danger of becoming the Christmas dinner. His first thought about her are, “I got a new friend, all right. But what a gamble friendship is! Charlotte is fierce, brutal, scheming, bloodthirsty- everything I don’t like. How can I learn to like her, even though she is pretty and, of course, clever?” (White, 1952) Wilbur is unsure of the spider but in time he will understand that Charlotte has a kind heart and was a loyal friend until the end. Wilbur starts to like Charlotte so much that he wants to be like her. He even ties a string to his tail and tries to spin a web like his spider friend does. This is an example of friendship when you enjoy the others company so much you want to do the same things they do. Even though Wilbur fails their bond gets stronger and Wilbur learns from Charlotte. Wilbur later learns that he will be killed at Christmas time to be a tasty pork entrée. Charlotte is very upset about losing her friend and tries to think of a plan to save his life. She concludes that bugs are smarter then people and she can trick people into things because they are gullible. She reveals the plan on writing a word on her web will help save the life of the pig. The represents how friendship can be powerful because if Wilbur didn’t want to be Charlottes there would’ve been no way of saving him. Being friends any one no matter who they are can have a huge impact on your life even when you don’t expect it. After the reaction of the first web the animals of the barn come together to all pitch in to save Wilbur. He starts to create more friendships that help him.
