The stories in this chapter are typical of the times and vividly portray the gradual, disarming, and even confusing nature of the transformation that took place shortly after the war as the Valley began to shed its agricultural roots.

I was born in San Jose in 1947 (a third generation native), and started working on my grandfather’s ranch of apricots, prunes, and walnuts at the age of eight. Like the other younger children, I starting out picking up "ground fruit" from under the trees. I remember vividly how pleased with myself I was after the first tree, and my sense of achievement as I approached the end of the first row. Then the reality sunk in—the next row. That was certainly a lesson that would serve me well over the next sixty years

Something called "Valley Fair" was to be built way out on Stevens Creek Road. It would be a shopping center, whatever the heck that might be. I very clearly remember the adults, and in particular those adults of my grandparents age, griping to each other about it. "Who the heck is going to go all the way out there to shop? Are they crazy? That's what downtown is for." When construction started I can remember riding my bicycle through the construction site. When it opened (in 1956 or 1957, I think) the world of shopping changed …show more content…
I moved with my family in 1943 to what was then Cupertino. My parents had purchased a summer and weekend home on Titus Avenue, which runs between Prospect and Cox. When Saratoga incorporated, everything up to Prospect was included in Saratoga. Our summer home became our residence and my dad commuted by train to San Francisco. James Gregory’s, American Exodus, is a book that focuses on Dust Bowl migration to California, and their economic and social struggles in California. The book first starts off setting up the historical context of the Dust Bowl and the migrants with statistics, maps, pictures, and migrant backgrounds in the introduction. The overall book reads like a history textbook on the Dust Bowl, which is divided into two parts instead of narrative based on one family like The Grapes of Wrath. The first part of the book is organized chronologically, focusing on the resettlement of the Dust Bowlers, and the second part is done thematically and focuses on Okie culture. Gregory’s approach successfully showed the clash of cultures and social struggles the migrants faced in California accurately without having to caricaturize the migrants.…

When most people think of the North Carolina State Fair many things come to mind such as richly smoked tin foil wrapped turkey legs, tipping, turning neon rides, driving around in circles looking for a place to park, and foods that no one would ever think to deep fry. When I think of the North Carolina State fair, I think of cold fall breezes, ammonia, sawdust, haircuts, and rushing around. My side of the State Fair is the side few see and many ignore. The State Fair for me normally begins sometime in late spring, early summer, when we start training the lambs.…

These intercalary chapters are a narrative technique in which Steinbeck informs the reader about the economic impact of the Great Depression upon the common farmers in the U.S. during that time. In chapter 11, Steinbeck uses the intercalary chapter technique to describe the incoming of the modern tractors and the effect this modernization had on the land the farmers had occupied. Steinbeck’s masterful use of syntax, diction and parallelism to create depressed, degenerating tone of human loss.…

The author writes, “And America is still the best place to be, except when it comes to smoking. I’ve smoked since I was twelve, and I’m not stopping” (Plummer 28).…
