This monologue is based off of interviews of women ages sixty-five to seventy-five. Many of these women were terrified to talk to the interviewers about their vaginas, asking “What’s a smart girl like you going around talking to old ladies about their down-theres for. We didn’t do this kind of a thing when I was a girl” (Ensler 10). She goes on to explain why she kept herself away from men since 1953. Describes her vagina as a “damp cellar” and saying “you do not want to go down there”. The woman feels this way because of her age. Society has told her that since she is so old she must keep her sexual desires to herself, and even be disgusted by her own vagina. Towards the end, the woman becomes excited to talk about her body because she has never gotten to tell anyone this before and is happy that her body is seen as beautiful when she has not been shown that in so long. This monologue is beneficial to feminist ideals because the idea of a beautiful older woman is praised as opposed the idea that younger is beautiful. The Vagina Monologues offers a voice to all
