Renaissance Faire Concert Report

The UT Dallas School of Arts and Humanities presented a concert at the Jonsson Performance Hall titled “A Renaissance Faire.” They held showings October 28th & 29th from 8 PM to 9:30 PM. The show featured the UT Dallas Chamber Singers and students from Advanced Vocal Instruction. The concert singers preformed mainly a cappella, but they were also accompanied by accompanist Michael McVay, who played an electronic piano modified to sound like a lute. Kathryn Evans, the conductor, also accompanied the choir on stage. A distinct characteristic of the show was that there were more soloist songs than choir performances! The conductor was also absent unless the entire group was on stage. Each of the solos lasted for about the same time, with no special distinction given to one over the other. They also showcased their talents by demonstrating their abilities to not build too much tension or rigidness on stage, while also completely focusing on the task at hand. Individually, each person used their unique voices and song choices to promote an atmosphere of professionalism and singular quality. Finally, they always displayed a confident ability in themselves and in each other by standing tall and refusing to break character or hesitate at any given moment.
One song emphasizes four distinct characteristics of music. In Il est bel et bon, the melody is divided into four parts, which makes the song convey an echoing resonance. The song does not emphasize a singular melody; instead, it heavily focuses on harmony because of the parts. The rhythm proceeds at a moderate pace, while maintaining the beat throughout the song.
