A stylistic writing mistake I commonly make in essays is the use of unnecessary large words. This type of mistake is commonly found among college students. These students “will try to make themselves sound smarter by reaching for the thesaurus and using big, ponderous words they barely understand (collision detection Page 1).” Which makes it seem to the teacher that student is just finding a word that sounds more informed to impress him/her instead of actually writing a well-informed essay. “Too many complex words are like hurdles in a race, barriers to understanding which slows readers down (plain language page 1).” This use of unnecessary large words causes students essays to flow poorly and be difficult to understand.
