Edgar Allan Poe used time of day to place a dark tone to the story. He stated on page 538 paragraph one that every night at midnight he opens the door a little bit more each night. He also uses setting to give false sense of security for the victim. On page 538 paragraph 2 he states that every morning he spoke to the old man,he spoke courteously and even called him by name in a hearty tone. He also keeps count of each day that passes before he finally kills the old man. He counted eight days and on the eighth night he was more than cautious opening the door at midnight, this was written on page 538 paragraph 3. The author also uses time to represent how long he had to wait inside the room at midnight. On the book it states on page 539 paragraph 4 that for a whole hour he did not move a muscle and in the meantime I did not hear him lie down.
