Most of Hawthorne’s critics feel as if “Young Goodman Brown” one of his best works. In my opinion D.C. McKeithan chooses to interpret Hawthorne’s tale by using an example of a man who is saddened into distrust by the sins of the people surrounding him. He is made skeptical and untrusting of others because of his own contributes into sin. McKeithan goes around this by mainly seeing that while there are a bunch of different interpretations, past critics have failed to realize some of the most apparent parts of the story.…

Literary Device Usage: Young Goodman Brown While reading the story "Young Goodman Brown", the literary device usage was plentiful, while there was many options to choose from, I feel that symbolism is one of the most frequently used literary devices in this story, and also the most meaningful. The author did not stray away from the use of religious symbolism, although everyone interprets things differently, I think that is the point, that's why authors use symbolism and other literary devices. I feel that symbolism is one of the most obvious devices used well in this story. When the character first arises in the forest, he seems to be an ordinary man that had a staff with a serpent carved into it. My father being a preacher,…

‘The devil!’ screamed the pious old lady. ‘Then Goody Cloyse knows her old friend?’ observed the traveller... ‘…is it your worship indeed?’ cried the good dame. ‘Yea, truly is it, and in the very image of my old gossip, Goodman Brown, the grandfather of the silly fellow that now is’ (Hawthorne 5).” The traveller, accompanying Brown, to a similar destination is an elderly man who is seen to look like an older version of Goodman Brown—truly looking a lot like his grandfather did. The Devil represents evil and he knows that he will bring him harm. Even though Goodman Brown seeks the Devil it is shown that he is still hesitant, saying his “father never went into the woods on such an errand, nor his father before him” and that they have “been a race of honest men and good Christians”(Hawthorne, 26). Goodman Brown, despite wanting to sin, still believes deep down that seeking out the Devil is trouble. The Devil, however, scoffs at the idea that the Browns were a good family. He has had multiple run ins with Goodman Brown 's father and grandfather, telling him that his grandfather “lashed the Quaker woman so smartly through the streets of Salem” and that his father “set fire to an Indian village, in King Philip 's War”(Hawthorne, 26).…

Young Goodman Brown dreams the witch’s coven, but in his dream he is an active participant, experiencing it first hand. I believe this is a dream because Goodman Brown sees other townspeople, including his wife, walking in the woods to the meeting of the witches. Also, I believe he falls asleep in the woods before he meets the older man because he wakes up in the same place. It does make a difference in my interpretation of the story because it makes the events in the plot easier to understand, especially how demented the events sound. Hawthorne uses many symbols in the story, two of the most important being his wife, Faith and the woods.…

He had a large collection of literature that ranged from children’s stories, nonfiction sketches, a presidential campaign biography of Franklin, essays, and four major novels (Alexander 3). This large background of different types of literature helped him become the Hawthorne that people know today. Hawthorne believed that sin and evil are present in people, that original sin visited us and that when deeply thinking the mind is not free from any thought (Alexander 3).…
