In Monroe's Motivated Sequence Analysis

At this very second someone in the world is trying to persuade another individual about something, it could be on a topic they are passionate about or for their benefit. In President Obama and Macklemore’s case, they are on a mission to persuade people to find help for anyone that has, specifically, Opioid Addiction problems. When President Obama and Macklemore were aired on May 14, 2016 for the Weekly Presidential Address, both of them introduced the idea of finding support for Opioid Addiction. Both men, in the video, used different persuasion techniques in order to attempt to get their message across to the audience. This is one of President Obamas strengths and he showed it in the video by first introducing a fun fact about himself, liking hip-hop music, and then introducing Macklemore and his accomplishments. The second step was to show the need. This is when the speaker presents the problem and what needs to be done. Both, Obama and Macklemore did this well by going straight to the point and identifying that there is a situation with opioid usage and showing some data to support it. The third step is satisfaction; this is when the speaker gives a solution to the problem. President Obama provided some information that he is currently working with his administration to lower over-dose deaths and that he is informing us that he is going to be working with Congress in order to raise money for these types of treatments and to help further train doctors on the amount of prescribed medication to give a person. Next, in the Monroe Motivated Sequence, there is visualization, this is when the speaker gives the audience some results that will benefit them. Now, in the video this sequence step was weak because all President Obama mentioned was that if we help others get the help they need, we will not see families break apart. Which is motivational if you do know people in these situations but for others that do not, it might not convince them enough. Lastly, the last sequence is action, this is when the speaker asks the audience to take action. Macklemore and President Obama address the action they want people to take when they finish viewing the video and it is to get anyone with an opioid addiction problem to get them help. The organization of the speech was simple enough to follow and most of the sequences for each of the steps in the Monroe’s Motivated Sequences were strong points except for the visualization.
