An author will use techniques to create a particular mood in his poem like Edgar Allan Poe. Mood can affect a reader by helping them to determine if the story or poem is worth reading and if they will continue to read. In “The Raven,” Poe creates an uncanny mood. If a person reads the poem, they will pick up on the mood and decide to either keep reading or stop, depending if they like the mood. In “The Raven,” Poe used techniques such as imagery, tone, suspense, and provided a setting to help set the mood of his poem, which brings me to my next paragraph.

The raven in the poem kept repeating the one word, “Nevermore” (pg. 941) This kept adding to the suspense because as a reader we wait for the raven to say something else, only he never does. This factor adds to the uncanny mood of “The Raven” because it is strange and very unusual for a raven to speak. Another suspenseful moment in the poem is when the speaker keeps trying to find the tapping noise and whom or what is making it. Which adds to the eeriness of the poem since it is dark, gloomy, and the speaker has a sorrow-filled tone. The suspense along with the mood of “The Raven,” will make the reader want to see what happens next and read the poem till it is finished. The setting of the poem is described in the quote, “Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,” (pg. 940) and again in, “Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak December.” (pg. 940) The setting amplifies the eerie mood because it is very gloomy, mysterious, and a little strange. Setting usually is in the beginning of stories or poems like Poe’s, “The Raven.” Setting can affect the mood of a story or poem. In this poem, the setting helps create the eerie mood and the reader will be able to know where and when this strange poem takes place.
