The Use Of Genetically Modified Organism

Improved Essays
Most of the food product in America today is subjected to use of Genetic Engineering (FDA, 2013). The correlation between GMO (Genetically Modified Organism) and GE, is that GMO is a term that is used to describe organisms that are produced by genetic modification because of which there is an improvement in the productivity, quality, or performance. On the other hand GE (genetic Engineering), is a term that is used to describe high tech methods that incorporate genes directly into an organism that are not sexually compatible using recombinant DNA techniques. Just like they say every coin has two sides and I will not disagree that the human intervention in creating these GE products can not only be lifesaving but at times can be life menacing to the human population. In my opinion the technology will not only benefit the …show more content…
But before we go and discuss that lets ask our self a Question, What exactly is Genetic Engineering?
Genetic Engineering is the modification of an organism’s genetic composition by artificial ways. This often involves transfer of specific traits or genes that were not already present from one organism to the other. The technique not only leave people talking about its great uses but also how human mind works in creating these GE products in the scientific world. Food is defined by the FDA as being a necessity for human and other animals for survival, because of this regulation is set to insure the safety of consumer (FDA, 2013). The FDA

Most will want to take the information and twist it for you and make it sound like a GM crop is some sort of completely made up science experiment, but I’m here to tell you that it’s not. It might sound kinda scary calling something a Genetically Modified Organism, but what does it really mean?…

Genetically modified food is defined as organisms in which the genetic material has been altered in a way that does not occur naturally by mating and/or natural recombination. Foods produced from or using GM organisms are often referred to as GM foods. This issue relates to agriculture due to the fact that agriculture isn’t only for growing crops and livestock. Agriculture also relates to growing healthy and well nourished people. Part of people growing healthy and well nourished includes what they in take in their body.…

A Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) is an organism whose chromosome is altered to appear different than it would originally appear without alteration. When looking at GMO’s, Michael Specter -an American journalist for “The New Yorker”- and Dr. Vandana Shiva -a science scholar- took positions on the topic of GMO’s. Michael Specter’s belief is that if GMO’s are not harmful, there is no true reason for opposing them. On the other hand, Dr. Shiva believes that although GMO’s are not harmful, there are other reasons for opposing them, such as the cost of seeds. Although they have several different opposing points, they do appear to find common ground within the endangerment of global food supply.…

GMOs are any genetically modified organisms, such as plants or animals. These organisms can be used in various ways, such as for scientific research, producing goods, and most commonly, genetically modified foods. A more specific example of GMOs being used for food products are in genetically modified crops and animals. Genetically modified crops come from agriculture.…

Due to research of genetic engineering, scientists have created ways to grow more fruits and vegetables, clone animals, collect more resources, save lives, collect information on the cloning process, and overall, better life for humans. Genetically modified foods (or GM foods) are all around the world. It has become almost impossible in this culture and time for one to eat a meal without having a genetically modified ingredient included. A GM food is a food that has been mass produced and/or produced faster by the use of chemicals and unnatural injections to the food while it was growing.…

Introduction Genetically modified foods have become a major concern and have caused controversy regarding both their health and environmental effects (2). ' Using modern techniques of genetic engineering, it is possible to introduce specific genetic material derived from any species of plant, animal, or microorganism, or even a synthetic material, into different species of plant' (Journal 1) This allows a desired trait to be enhanced and reproduced. (3) (4) ' The resulting plants are commonly known as genetically modified (GM) plants; when used as food sources, they are known as GM foods.'…

Genetically modified organisms are organisms that have been altered by outside forces and techniques. Genetically modified organisms, otherwise known as GMOs are a huge topic that has been a debate for years. GMOs are used in foods, medicine, and other goods. GMOs have been also used as research against viruses and other diseases. This is a new science that has created combinations of plants, animals, and bacteria that have not occurred through nature, but though insertion.…

GMOs: The Manmade Super Food Or the Genetic Atomic Bomb? GMOs, like many other things, start from good intentions, but the effect it can and does have on the planet, the animals and people aren’t so good. It's great to live in the present but sometimes we have to put the future first. Genetic engineering (or GE) food started in the late 1990’s; 1996 to be more precise. We have been told that it’s better for the world, that it can help us produce more crops that are bigger and healthier; that it’s low cost, and we don’t need to use extremely harmful pesticides on them.…

Do The Pros of GMO’s outweigh the Cons? Since the introduction on the genetically modified organism in the mid to late 1990’s many people have debated on their economic and environmental impact, as well as their safety for human consumption. Many companies like Monsanto and Dow Agro-science that produce these bioengineered foods have conducted research on the topics of environmental and economic benefits as well as the safety of GMO foods. The results of the studies conclude that genetically modified foods are safe, economically beneficial, environmentally sensible, and have no danger to the people that consume them.…

We are experimenting when we inject a gene from another species into our bodies. Why would someone risk food their lives on something they are not sure of instead of something that has proven to be healthier for us throughout history. GMOs' are not guaranteed therefore we do not know if they produce any side effects. If so, then we don’t know if the effects if any will be long-term or short-term. Individuals who support the practice of genetically engineering products suggest that this process will help to improve the nutritional contents of the foods we eat as well as help those who health deficiencies such as diabetes.…

Genetically engineered food was created to enhance food, by adding supplements that can help fight cancer and other beneficiaries with eating them. However, in the short run genetical engineered food products have harmed various individuals and their lives already. “In the United States people have been eating genetically engineered food since approximately the 1990’s, according to Ackerman, Jennifer”(source 1). In this globalization era with well-developed nations and advanced technologies, it happens where great minds combined with those technological advancements, have a lead to creations and achievements that somehow would have been impossible to be created or achieved. Genetic engineering made it possible to this matter. Generally, it is understood that genetic engineering itself is the technique of altering the genetic constitution of cells (or individuals) by the selective removal, insertion or modification of individual genes or gene sets. Plus, it is a science which enables people to live better apparently. As mentioned by Ianello, Sevciuc, Dvila Assumpo, & Antnio (2013) (p. 63), the term genetic engineering has been commonly used not only…
