By using the dogs favorite toy, it can be trained to find a scent and indicate that there is an illegal substance present. At the start of training a dog is presented with their toy, the toy has been carefully washed so no scent is on it. Handlers will play with the dog using the toy, after awhile the trainer will take the toy and cover it in the scent of in illegal substance like marijuana. Next trainers will take the toy back out to the do where they will play with it. This causes the dog to make a connection between being rewarded and the odor of marijuana. After this the trainer will take the toy with the smell of the drug on it and hide or bury it in the ground. Now the dog in training will be searching for the toy. Once it is located the dog will start digging for it, or in other words indicate to the handler that there are dugs in that location (How Police Dogs
