Four Types Of Dogs Essay

Canines are a great tool that is used widely across the world by both police and military. Having a K-9 as a resource can benefit the one using them greatly, this is because a “dogs nose is 40 times more powerful than a human nose” (Tyson, Peter ). With their nose being 40 times better than a humans nose they can pick up on things that humans can not, making the K-9 unit a great tool to sniff out drugs, bombs and picking up the scent of other humans. Dogs are trained at a young age to become a part of the K-9 unit for many police forces, the dog of choice is any of four different types of dogs they are chosen for how easy they can be trained and the level of intelligence.
Dogs have been often referred to as mans best friend. “We can learn so many things from a dog’s behavior, personality, demeanor, resiliency, and most importantly, the willingness to provide their family members with unconditional love, loyalty, and companionship down to their very last breath” (Parent, Bernie). By using the dogs favorite toy, it can be trained to find a scent and indicate that there is an illegal substance present. At the start of training a dog is presented with their toy, the toy has been carefully washed so no scent is on it. Handlers will play with the dog using the toy, after awhile the trainer will take the toy and cover it in the scent of in illegal substance like marijuana. Next trainers will take the toy back out to the do where they will play with it. This causes the dog to make a connection between being rewarded and the odor of marijuana. After this the trainer will take the toy with the smell of the drug on it and hide or bury it in the ground. Now the dog in training will be searching for the toy. Once it is located the dog will start digging for it, or in other words indicate to the handler that there are dugs in that location (How Police Dogs
