The running of these ads in correlation with the beginning of the NFl season was much more than just a coincidence. Anheuser-Busch as well as the rest of the brewing companies know that the same demographic that watches football is the same demographic that drink the most beer. Therefore, by running their ads during the football season helped them reach the demographic of college and middle aged men. These commercials have become cultural touchstones, but the advertisements have one job and that is to convince a potential customer to buy or use a company’s product or service. The Weight Watchers advertisement is a perfect example of how effective advertisements can be in only a few short seconds. What this commercial is really selling underneath its veneer of supposed helpfulness is emotional manipulation as it preys on people’s insecurities regarding their weight and shame them for eating food that may not be considered healthy. The primary audience for this kind of ad are people who emotionally vulnerable and…

Realistically, I think the case could give more in depth background on the Doritos Company and how it led to the point where they need fan submissions for a commercial. However I do believe that is adequate and just by reading it I gained the general understanding of what was the background of this case. The major reason for conducting this program was to try and beat out Budweiser rating for the best super bowl commercial, while also trying to get more fan participation in the company. It seems that this commercial program was more reactive because it stems from Budweiser having the best commercial at the super bowl every year, and because of this Doritos wanted to fire back with a way to beat them out. I think they targeted the right audiences;…

Once again I thought that I was going to struggle to get to the required page length. I used what we talked about in class like the rhetorical situation and audience to examine the commercial instead of just watching it without a purpose. Looking at the advertisement through this different lens, I could see how everything that Bud Light did in the commercial from product placement to the setting of the ad all was done for a specific purpose.…

Researchers find that in regions like Britain, North America and Australia, “drinking-places are more likely to be enclosed, insular, even secretive environments, with solid walls and doors, frosted windows and substantial screens or partitions” (SIRC). The secrecy and exclusion of drinking places reflect that people in these cultures are not willing to be seen or known by others when they are consuming alcohol. Hence, drinking places are designed to ensure that drinkers are concealed. There exist other societies such as France and Italy where people “tend to favor ‘uninhibited,’ highly visible drinking places, with large windows and open spaces, such that customers and facilities are clearly displayed” (SIRC). These features show that people in these societies are more open to alcohol, and see alcohol as a normal part of the everyday world because in their cultures “the consumption of alcohol is as integrated into common behaviors as sleeping or eating” (SIRC).…
