Throughout this semester in class we have discussed inequality from many different perspectives but the overarching theme of the class was the fact that something needs to be done about inequality particularly here in the US. I am not saying it is right to have people living on the streets while there are people driving million dollar cars down that same street but is that not what makes Capitalism work? According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary Capitalism is defined as, “An economic system characterized by private or corporate ownership of capital goods, by investments that are determined by privation decision, and by prices, production, and the distribution of goods that are determined mainly by competition in a free market.” Early in the semester we discussed many economic philosophers such as Marx and Nozick. In this paper I will discuss both of their philosophies and how they fit into this debate. I will also discuss the concept of what people should receive should be based on their contribution. Those three major points will be used prove that the US should not become a welfare state. The first reason that I believe we should not allow the United States to become a welfare state is because capitalism is truly the best economic system. As I defined in the introduction Capitalism is essentially the idea that the government will be hands off of the economy. This idea does not only benefit the wealthy or corporate America but rather it benefits everyone. It…
