As a result, I would like to become a counselor for a high school. I discovered as a student, I learned so much about the real world that could not be taught in a classroom. However, with experience, I can become very resourceful. If a student comes to me needing help in Math, I could find a tutor at no charge. I could help the student by providing transportation to and from Math tutoring sessions. As a counselor, I have to be concerned about my students and of their well being.
But in this process the counselor will need to think about the consequences for these actions. The ACA code A.6.b. Extending Counseling Boundaries of ethics, warns counselor to use their judgment when invading the clients personal space (American Counseling Association, 2005). These things would include going to the student’s family picnic or attending church with the student. The counselor will need to use professional judgment when being invited to such events.
However for some subject like abuse, rape or pregnancies, I will have to consult with my supervisor on how to proceed with these issues. According to the ACA ethics code (2005) H.4.b. Professional Boundaries in Distance Counseling, states that when it comes to matters that are questionable, the counselor is encouraged to reach out to colleagues and/ or a supervisor for help. When the counselor uses the semistructured method, they are getting to know the student thereby allowing the student to get to know the counselor. The counselor should begin by asking questions or giving the student a questionnaire to fill out. This will help the counselor understand the basic about the student.
When gathering this information, I will have to keep sensitive information locked away. The code B.6.b. Confidentiality of Records and Documentation of the ACA ethics code, states that I must keep clients records secure and only allow authorized personal to view it (American Counseling Association, 2005). If information of the student is given out then the student will never trust me again. I could also be reported and risk losing my licensure.
In conclusion, being a counselor for The Urban League has always been a goal of mine. Understanding the values and advantages of an intake interviews will prepare me for the job. Being able to gather information, building a rapport and resourceful will hopefully help present myself as a trust worthy and reliable counselor. But I will also need to be mindful of ethical codes such as Extending Counseling Boundaries, Professional Boundaries in Distance Counseling, and Confidentiality of Records and Documentation that should be up-held when counseling young
