I chose to observe Shick’s Tobacco Shoppe because out of the nineteen years of my life living in Clarion County, not once have I stepped into this place. I never even heard about this shoppe until about a year ago when all the kids in my high school started vaping. I have vaped from my friends or at parties, but I don’t own one myself so I had no reason to go. When observing, I found that while there is a sitting area, most people would just come, purchase what they need and then leave. The ones that did stay were mainly what seemed to be high school boys.…

The air was crisp; dew dripped off of the freshly mowed lawn. A slight breeze swung me softly side to side. There I was, on the ragged concrete steps, leaning morosely aside the brick pillar. I had caught myself wondering if he hadn’t imagined it, if it had been real, there would be an escape from modern day troubles, it was magical, the way he described it, it would be an amazing experience. Before colonial times, the tobacco native to America was smoked by Native Americans for religious reasons like prayer, health, and spiritual protection. When the European settlers arrived in America they did not have much use for the native tobacco, until the 1600’s when the English settler John Rolfe began experimenting with American tobacco. Only a few years later Rolfe revealed a sweeter and more fragrant tobacco to the Jamestown colony. The “bewitching weed” or “poor man’s crop” that Rolfe cultivated was an instant hit and saved the Jamestown colony’s economy, which until that point had been in a depression, from collapsing. However, even though tobacco was quite popular there was still some debate, in 1604 King James I was the first recorded spokesman to proclaim the perilous and fatal effects of smoking.…
