Why I Chose To Study Biology

There have not been many things which have taken up most of my mind in the past few years other than Genetics. Ever since I attended Dr. Lander’s lecture MIT 7.00x Introduction to Biology, I have been hooked onto the subject. He talked primarily about genetics as he is a geneticist, but attributed to other aspects of biology as well. He taught a college level course, and when I took it, I was still in high school, but regardless, I understood most of the genetic aspect of it. It feels that it is the more elegant fields in biology, with more definite and objectivity than others. Since then, I have volunteered at the Singapore Science Centre, being in charge of explaining scientific concepts to people, so I do not think that there would be any problems when it comes to explaining the research I hope to undertake under your wing during the presentation process of the program. We had to “work” in a lab. There wasn 't much work than to sit in the lab wearing lab coats and explaining basic neurological phenomena to people who were interested to learn it. I though I was get a feel for lab culture, but received anything but. The elegance of chromosomal segregation can and is appreciated, and credit is given where credit is due. There are places and times (such as post-natal) where …show more content…
The first of the few reasons that I want to do research (over the summer especially) is that I want to keep my mind occupied with some work, I do not like being left alone to my means - gives me a sense of not being needed. The second is that I like knowing things that I do not know (for how long I will retain them is another matter; but that is why I’ve learned to take comprehensive notes). The universe has a sort of disorder associated with it, and my goal (in life) is to categorise entropy, and the entropy of life - something so meaningless in its genesis and yet drenched in meaning, sense and need for survival thrills

The Basics of Gene Expression and Control Genetics is a very diverse field of science, because it encompasses so many aspects of not only what happens inside organisms, but also how offspring relate to parents and ancestors and many other processes. Although every bit of genetics is important, many things in an organism would not be possible without the expression of genes. Through expressions of genes, organisms provide for themselves and "fulfill" what is the basis of their genetic possibility. These processes of transcriptional gene control, translational gene control, and post-translational gene control helps make key components that help an organism function in many ways.…

The Violinist Thumb is a book by Sam Kean that describes how DNA, and heredity function. The book is divided into four parts. Part one describes the basics of heredity. It goes into detail about base pairs, amino acids, RNA, and the such to give readers an overview of the system of heredity. One of my favorite stories from part one is the story of Tsutomu Yamaguchi, who survived both atomic explosions in Japan during World War II, and lived into his nineties.…

You never know how much you want something until it's almost taken away from you. During my CA-1 year I was involved in an incident where there was a mishandling of narcotics. My residency was on the line, and even after I was cleared of all wrongdoing, I still felt like I had something to prove. I had to show this program and myself that I belonged. Unfortunately, I've been in this situation before, as the underdog, time and time again.…

There are many careers or occupations that require the knowledge and use of genetics. Among these are virologists and pharmacologists. A virologist is a person who studies virology, which is “the study of virus and virus-like agents, including (but not limited to) their taxonomy, disease-producing properties, cultivation and genetics” (Mestrovic, 2015, para. 1). I could say that a day in the life of a virologist would start in his/her office, which is the laboratory, where he/she would perform tests and studies on different viruses that infect or affect not only humans but also animals and plants.…

As a high school senior, the question I am most used to hearing is, “where do you want to go to college,” and my habitual response is the Wharton Undergraduate School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. But I think that the more apt question is “why do you want to go to college?” Personally, I want to learn. The Wharton motto of “knowledge for action” embodies this desire to learn and use this knowledge to pursue a career in something that engages and interests me. I am an aspiring investment banker and international business executive and am intrigued by mergers and acquisitions, investment banking from an international perspective, and the effect of international events on the global economy and the ensuing effect on corporations.…

Genetic research is in rising demand due to the new technologies available to view and locate errors in the chromosomes. I am interested in researching the inheritance of genetic disorders in order to find cures for those diseases, giving hope to families affected to be able to lead healthy and informed lives. The education I will receive while attending college will benefit my long term plans significantly in my pursuit of an advanced degree in genetic studies and professional success in genetic research, allowing me to explore my passion: the unknowns of genetic inheritance. Knowledge of this subject and entrance to lab work would be impossible without an undergraduate and graduate degree. My education during college has the capability of later providing crucial information that can change lives for the…

Growing up in a household whose first language is not English, I was determined to be successful to represent my family. Biology is the science of life or living matter in all forms and phenomena, especially with reference to origin, growth, reproduction, structure and behavior. Living beings have the desire to discover who they truly are and how they came to be the person that they are today. Many people have specific beliefs in an ultimate being that rules over all else, but most of these beliefs cannot be proven. The study of biology is based upon facts and hypotheses that can be tested and supported. Without biology it would be difficult to understand the beauty of life, and how living organisms are created and how the basic metabolic processes help organisms survive.…
