In terms of my academic career, plagiarism can be avoided by carefully studying citation requirements and dedicating sufficient time for completion of assignments. I will consistently keep the citation requirements provided in this course on my computer, so that I can reference them throughout my writing process. While researching, I will paraphrase material and write notes on material. I will use these notes for writing. This will enable me to avoid having access to the original content as I am writing. By not having the source material verbiage in sight during the writing process, I will be less likely to inadvertently insert it into my work without proper citation. Additionally, I will dedicate at least twice the time I think is required to an assignment. The result is that I will avoid any temptations to consciously or unconsciously copy another writer’s work and use it as my own. Furthermore, upon completion of every assignment I will run the assignment through the plagiarism detector mentioned in the course material, along with other free online detectors. At a Conference on College Composition and Communication at Texas Tech University, teams found that many people use excessive quotations; the result is that their work tests positive for plagiarism (Jaschik, 2009). The person may them be forced to go through a difficult ordeal of proving that they did not plagiarize or accepting the fact that they did, and accepting the negative academic and career consequences of plagiarism. The result iof being found to have plagiarized can include: sanctions by schools and potential reprimands by educators.
