Western Illinois University Dr. Ronald Williams, who is the Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs at Western Illinois University is a person that I contacted to get more information on their mentoring and retention efforts. Western Illinois Normal and Training School was established in 1899. Today, Western Illinois University offers several bachelor’s and master’s degree programs and two doctoral degrees, and certificate programs to more than 11,000 students. The University has an inclusive retention effort in place, meaning everyone has a role in retention. There formal retention efforts include a university-wide mentoring program for their 1st time freshman who receive a faculty/staff mentor, and a First Year Experience (FYE) program which includes college-transition course, and a 100 level guided course, the College Student Inventory (CSI) and a host of tutorial, counseling, and career services. The purpose of the CDI is to assess students’ need, to identify students’ strengths and challenges, identify at-risk students, conduct individual student-advisor conferences, promote academic and social integration, follow-up on all referrals, and refer student to the appropriate resources. It is very important that when we engage with students that we refer them to the right resources at all times. It is also important that through FEPERA that all those who are responsible for student success engage in conversation to assist students…
