The United States of America, the sole global hegemon in terms of soft and hard power alike, certainly has the lion’s share of influence in the world. A country that has the ability to secure its own interest months in advance by drone strikes around the globe. With the globalization of democracy, it’s only a matter of time until U.S. influence can be felt everywhere. In the state of monetary power, the United States polity, the current path shows that the wealthy elite will own the future.
The Washington based band Queensryche once uttered the lines,
“Fighting fire with empty words
While the banks get fat
And the poor stay poor
And the rich get rich
And the cops get paid
To look away
As the one percent rules America”. (Queensryche 88)
The general consensus seems to be that the government, both local and federal, seems to be run by the wealthy at some point, although it is not agreed upon unanimously. Redistribution of wealth is, and always has been, a polarizing debate around the world. A lot of the controversy stems more from the suffering of the impoverished, than the riches at the top, but they are both connected in some form. Those who are at the bottom of the socio-economic hierarchy find it very difficult to crawl out of it. About half of people who make it out of the poverty threshold will slip back into it within 5 years (McKernan 9). However, the loop also works at the top of the hierarchy.
