The United States does not trust its citizens or other countries when they decide to spy on people who have done nothing wrong. Those people must trust the government, but the government does not trust the people. For example, when one pays taxes, that person trusts that their money is going to the government to pay their dues, whether it be paving roads or fixing street lights. If that money goes into the pockets of the tax collector, then that person does not know. Citizens must trust their country, but a country does not have to trust its citizens. This double standard leads to anger and when people get angry, they protest. The United States does not need any more protestors more than those who are already protesting the election, which many believe was rigged for Donald Trump, thus showing a mistrust in the democratic system in America. The trust has been broken between America and its peoples. America has also managed to lose the trust of perhaps its only real friend in the middle east: Israel. President Obama’s negative remarks toward Prime Minister Netanyahu have been very negative and distrusting, therefore causing a great divide in the existing trust between these nations. When people are proven wrong, they are more likely to viciously hold onto their misinformation and wrongness than change their minds. This is the fundamental problem with humans. Some know this as pride, others call it hubris, and even more call it stubbornness. The fact is, excessive pride to the point of corruption is no stranger to governments who dig their heels in when people call them untrustworthy. Governments are most likely to look out for themselves and their special interests when they are challenged by the people, as proven in the election for President of the United States in 2016. The fact of the matter is that people want to be able to trust their government, and a government wants to be able to trust its people. When trust is lost on either side, a country is more apt to become corrupt and try to save itself before the wall of excessive pride and its ramifications come tumbling down. The bridge of trust must be repaired from both ends. The government certainly does not help any situation regarding trust when spying on citizens is part of their mantra.
