The United States Should Legalize Prostitution

Improved Essays
Twenty-two countries have legalized prostitution. Should the United States follow their footsteps? Prostitution should remain illegal for many reasons. Many prostitutes are in danger, have no idea about their rights, and are being forced to participate in the sex industry. Prostitutes are constantly in danger of injuries, death, and sexually transmitted diseases. Even if prostitution is legalized the danger will still exist. The danger of prostitution can’t be removed, because the act of prostitution is the danger(Post and Bishakha Datta 29). Prostitution is very dangerous for any one involved, especially the women. “The statistics are sickening. Field Research in nine countries concluded that 60 to 75 percent of women in prostitution were …show more content…
This is unhealthy for their physical health and also for their mental health. A social democrat member of the Amsterdam City Council, Karina Schaapman is an ex-prostitute. She believes that most prostitutes do not choose to go into prostitution, but are more or less pressured into it because of drug addiction, debts or past(sexual abuse).(Outshoorn 239). Voluntary prostitution may exist, but it is not a common occurrence. “Upon arrival, Irina learned she owes those in charge $10,000 and must repay the debt by prostitution” (Christianity Today). Just like Irina, many prostitutes are forced into prostitution to repay a debt. Many prostitutes need the money to feed a drug addiction. It is estimated that half of the prostitutes in the Netherlands are of ‘foreign’ descent and are forced to do the work by economic factors. These factors force them to work under bad conditions and for low wages. It is very difficult for prostitutes to exit prostitution because they need the money. (Outshoorn 240). Many prostitutes couldn't get out of the sex industry even if they wanted to. They are being forced and are unable to get out due to the fact that they speak a different language or must repay a debt. Prostitution should remain illegal. Prostitution should not be legalized due to the fact that many prostitutes are unaware of their rights, are in danger of death, injuries, and sexually transmitted diseases, and some are being forced into the sex work. Even though my opinion that it should stay illegal stayed the same afterwards I still think that. Starting with Shane, even though she states that she likes her profession throughout most of her article she goes over all bad things. Like how she doesn’t actually want to have sex with her client and is not given enthusiastic consent. She also mentions how emotional connection is asking to much because she is still a human being. While I completely agree that prostitutes are still human beings, I can’t help but feel that because they are being paid does make it ok for the client to ask of this.…

Women have the ability to make their own choices. Before they launched themselves into the industry they had thought about over alternatives before settled down on becoming prostitutes. Denying their ability to think for themselves as grown-up girls, drag them even down. It must be not forgotten that these women have the right to freely make that kind of work. Who are we to tell what is 'bad' or 'good' ?…

It is for this reason that legalizing prostitution could provide many countries with an economic advantage, for it would decrease the unemployment rate in those countries. Due to recent job markets being extremely limited in terms of job opportunities, many individuals are being let off work, and are unable to find jobs because there is a decrease in available vacancies. Therefore, considering prostitution as a career choice is something many have being doing for quite some time now, and for good reason, for prostitution is quite the lucrative business. Hence, if prostitution were legitimized, the stigma of being a sex worker would slowly decrease, and eventually, people would feel more comfortable pursuing this line of work, and this in itself would lead to an increase in employment. Similarly, when discussing the stigma that those in prostitution face, it is important to mention that if the stigma faced by prostitutes is lifted, it might facilitate the transition of those in prostitution to other lines of work, which would lead to an expansion in the non-sex work labor…

In my opinion, prostitution should not be either legalized or decriminalized because it is simply immoral act that only brings a negative impact on our society. Even though there are many articles and studies that say legalizing prostitution will decrease HIV and other sexual transmitted diseases, there is not much evidence that support their ideas. According to the article called “Should Prostitution Be Legalized?” proponents often say that decriminalization will decrease STDs since “it will offer prostitutes regular STD tests and pelvic exams, without fear of being turned in.” However, I think that legalizing prostitution would only increase the crime rates, child sexual exploitation, and human trafficking. It can also motivate other women…

As documented in the proposal argument essay "Case for Legalization of Prostitution", "The average annual income of an employee at one Nevada brothel working only one week per month is at least $100,000. Based on this figure, each legally licensed sex worker would contribute more than $20,000 in federal income taxes per year." (Sonntag, 2009). Our country is in poverty and the taxation of prostitution would be a huge contributor in getting it out of it's hole. Not only would taxing prostitution aide in decreasing poverty levels in America, but the legalization of prostitution would also create more jobs for the people too fearful of being arrested for their work otherwise.…

Prostitution is one of the oldest profession, not just to the United States, but worldwide, and the persecution of sex workers is just as old. With the popularity of prostitution, religious groups fought to guarantee that the United Sates outlawed the soliciting and offering of sex for money by the early 1900’s. This still remains the case to today in all states of the United States, with the exception of the state of Nevada. Nevada has legalized prostitution in counties with a population of fewer than 400,000 persons and the laws permit prostitution mostly by accepting the brothels and sex workers not necessarily condoning it. (Brents and Hausbeck)…

Prostitution is the act of sexual relations for money. I support the act of prostitution as an occupation. While many people are against this “occupation” it would actually benefit the world so much if we legalized and supported it. Prostitution should be decriminalized because it will reduce crime, it will help us live healthier, and it will benefit the world. Many people don’t really look at prostitution as being a job.…
