The space race was a competition, more or less between the Soviet Union and the United States of America to see who could get into space first. Kennedy wanted to win the race and get a man on the moon before the 1960’s ended (The Space Race). He motivated the country by appealing to their patriotism. Kennedy made a speech to congress about urgent nation needs, one of which was the urge to travel to space where he stated, “I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to earth”(Jfk Library) in doing this, he believed the United States could win the competition of the race to space. He said that to make this possible, more funding would be necessary.
