I was privileged to have a unique childhood. Until I was nine years old I lived in Kenya, East Africa due to my dad’s job as a Missionary Bush Pilot. Growing up in a third world country I was exposed at a young age to things such as extreme poverty, widespread corruption, and tribal warfare. I remember when I was eight living in Nairobi when a failed election process quickly led to rioting throughout the country. I was playing outside with my two year old brother when I heard a burst of gunfire from the riots not far away. I immediately picked my brother up and ran to the house where we got down on the floor. Even when nobody 's watching, I take responsibility for my actions. I try to treat everyone with respect even when no one else does. For example, as a starting senior on my high school soccer team I don’t feel the need to oppress the underclassmen just because I have some authority over them, as was the case when I was in their position. Instead I do my best to build them up to be the best players they can be. I have always disliked people who unjustly assert whatever power they have over others in order to feel better about themselves. On several occasions throughout my high school career I have stood up to such bullies who have felt the need to prey on those weaker than them to boost their own
