And despite all of the good things that would come from an increase of gun control, some would say there are many downsides as well. Restricting guns can be seen as a violation of rights, and a violation of the American way. Owning a gun is something that Americans take pride in, they love the idea of owning a gun and being able to protect their country. As it seems, everybody in the USA owns a gun, but you do have to be background checked first. Those who own guns have been proofed by the FBI, who perform checks at the time of purchase. so everyone who owns a gun should be safe to be around. Guns can also be used to protect and serve. “As a gun owner I have no right to endanger my neighbor, I have a responsibility not to do so” (Worley NP). Fighting terrorism, and saving innocent lives, is what many dream of doing, owning a gun makes people believe they are one step closer to that dream. It also helps people sleep at night knowing that if someone were to break in, the thief would come face to face with a barrel pointed at them. Other countries can also be quite liberal in their gun use. For instance, Switzerland is often seen as one of the largest gun countries in Europe. Guns are pushed to be seen like a positive thing, when they are the opposite. People feel uncomfortable and uneasy around guns, they are intimidating and to some, downright scary. “I think access to guns in this country is ridiculous, anybody can get one. I would not have moved here had I known somebody nearby had a cache of weapons!” (Worley NP). This quote, from an anonymous man neighboring a victim of murder, shows that individuals actively want to avoid guns. Having them shown as a positive in media can make individuals mad or uncomfortable. The point made in owning guns is not one of violence, they were used as a sign of protection, but now they are the items we need protection from. Guns are also viewed as a positive solely by those who own guns. They want to make guns look good so they can continue doing whatever they please. So many shootings show up on the news, the FBI has officially declared all shootings as, “Acts of terrorism” (Hwang NP). So many deaths and crimes are happening because of easy access to guns, every day on the news it’s always made clear that something is wrong with this country. Yet, you never see news stories about how guns ever helped somebody, or made their lives better.
