Democracy is such a big deal here in the United States, which it should be. We have a great election system where we, the people, get to choose who will represent us. We have created a great system of checks and balances where no branch can become too strong. Why is freedom in government important to me? Well, being able to choose a representative that will fight for what I believe in is a big deal to me. I want someone who will be able to voice my opinion in a county, state, or government offices. For instance, this is the difference of power between Asian countries and the West. A great quote from Kim Dae Jung, president of South Korea in the book Freedom in America that represented this notion is when he said “Asia was rich in the intellectual and institutional traditions that would provide fertile grounds for democracy. What Asia did not have was the organizations of representative democracy. The genius of the West was to create the organizations, a remarkable accomplishment that has greatly advanced the history of humankind.(181)” Without the freedom of representation, a person can not grow in a culture. This is why the United States will always be a world power. We are open to change and change is always happening around us. We must adapt to the way the world changes, and the United is adapting and always will
