Explain Why Some Students Do Not Succeed In The American Education System

Wow! Who would have ever thought that our country would become known to have one of the worst educational systems. The reason why some students do not succeed in the United States educational system is because everyone does not feel the same way about education. Some people believe that they do not need an education to become successful and some people feels as they do. In the education system, you have some people that want to learn and some that don’t. It can also be the tough environment the student lives in that makes them not want to learn. Also, some students do not have a strong support system to get them through school, such as family, teachers, and friends. These are some major factors that contribute to the United States of America …show more content…
Our society says one thing and then does another. They say education is the key to success; but then again there are people that are successful that never got an education higher than high school. This is the reason why the educational system is 50/50 between students that want to learn and students that do not. This being because most students where I am from try to get the easy way out and when they see people that are successful that never went to college they think that they can do that as well. It’s sad to say, but not everyone is born the same, you have to earn what you want, the hard way. According to The importance of college after high school graduation by Chris Blake “college provides you with the opportunity to educate yourself further and at a higher level in the field of your choice.” This is significant because you are not only learning about the career you chose; but also building relationships with people that can help you become …show more content…
According to the book The Freedom Writers with Erin Gruwell one student says “I’m not afraid of anyone anymore. Now I’m my own gang. I protect myself. I got my own back. I still carry my gun with me just in case I run into some trouble” (14). The issues that the student was dealing with at the time was family issues and being in a gang. I question myself to the fact why do students have to feel unsafe in an environment that they grew up in? The environment that the student lives in, most students where I’m from live the same. They are raised to protect themselves through any means necessary; even if that means using a gun just to feel protected. Their lifestyles flow into their education because the life they’re living is already rough as it is. Meaning most students are not even concerned about passing school; they are just focused on trying to survive by whatever it takes. Not everyone that lives in a bad environment falls victim. This is significant because some people make the best out their environment despite what is going on. Also, in The Freedoms Writers by Gruwell another student says “Raised in a shitty neighborhood, I have to adapt to what is happening around me...I got into tagging, because bangin and dealing drugs or kickin’ it with gangsters were not my thing” (21). He realized that he would not be a part of the violence in the city he was raised up in, but instead get

The article I have chosen for this reflection paper is “Look Out Kid, It’s Something You Did,” written by Bernadine Dohrn in 2013. This article details the criminalization of children as it has progressed over the past few decades. It opens with examples of school shootings and how they have shifted the public perspective of violence perpetrated by adolescents. With the proliferation of handguns in the homes of adolescents within the United States, the rates of children murdered by other children have skyrocketed. I feel there is a strong aspect of shock value when it comes to instances like these, which draws a disproportionate amount of media attention, but this does not account for the staggering results of cases of this nature.…

Just like how you used in the reading about bad drivers and how we would assume the worst, most people assume the worst about gangs and how the people that are getting shot deserved it or that it was a drug related crime. But that is not always the case. Another social psychological principle that operated at Harper schools was Cognitive dissonance. Cognitive dissonance happens when you do something that violates your view of yourself and causes an uncomfortable state of dissonance that motivates a change in either attitudes or behavior. In the school I assume that a lot of the kids have guns because everyone else had guns and they shot people because it needed to be done to save themselves and even if the person didn’t really agree with it or want to they did it anyway.…

To put a child in a place with a classmate who has demonstrated unpredictable actions and aggression is very inappropriate. Mrs. Robinson extends her reasoning in the New York Times article,“I Tired to Befriend Nikolas Cruz. He Still Killed My Friends” as she informs,” I was assigned to tutor him… Despite my discomfort, I sat down with him, alone.…
