If I was a 20 year old German-American male in 1917 when the United States declared war on Germany, I would not know how I would feel about it. Because one, I am not a male and two I wouldn’t know how I would feel about having to choose between Germany – since I am a natural born German—and between America, where I have spent my last 15 years in. I know that it would be difficult to choose between, but sometimes you have to do what you have to do.
My first option I would go with, would be to slip out of the U.S. and go live with an aunt and uncle who farm in the German-speaking part of Switzerland. I would go with this option as my first choice because even though I have lived in America for the last 15 years of my life and adapted to the customs and how things work I would feel awful for abandoning my heritage and fighting against them in war. Also, Switzerland was a neutral ground during World War 2 so I would feel safe there. Leaving America would help me avoid going into war for the U.S. Army as well as me not getting arrested for not joining and just leaving America for the sake of my heritage. I also would go to a farm in Switzerland because they have remained neutral through World War 1 and World War 2, so I would avoid the risk of dying, being held prisoner, or living and feeling awful about all the lives I would have to take while fighting. My second option would have to be just giving in and going to fight for the country I have lived in and adapted too. I know…
