Before I applied for college, my mom told me that if I got accepted into University of Chicago and another school, I should definitely choose the other one. That is because among the Chinese student society, the University of Chicago kind of has a notorious name. Although it offers one of the best undergraduate programs in this country, it is the environment that people can go into the campus anytime they like. And those would pose threat to students’ safety. Of course, the fact that it is located in Hyde Park-South Kenwood in Chicago which is the third largest city in the United States could, to some extent, justify the situation because due to the report by Chicago police, 228 violent crimes happened in that neighborhood on average between 2008 and 2013. The Blue light service allows those who think they are followed to pick up any one of the 271 phones. And the police is aware of the fact that potential victims may not have the chance to actually talk. So the person could press the button near the phone and keep doing so on one’s way to signal the police the route. Then police officers would try to intercept you. There is also a Blue Light escort service that allows students to call for escorts from Cornell University Police Auxiliary on their way back. Also, SHARE, which stands for Sexual Harassment and Assault - Response and Education, provides education for awareness for students and suggests sources for victims. However, most crimes happened each year have took place in student residencies, teaching facilities and libraries. A blue light service for buildings does not exist.
