Each number was assigned to a day of birth. For example, 258 corresponded with September 14. If the number that corresponded with your day of birth was drawn from a big glass bowl and you were between the ages of eighteen years old and thirty-five years old, you would be forced to join the military. You would be notified within a couple of days by a letter sent by the United States’ government. The draft lottery did not say you which branch of the military you would be put into. The branch you would serve in would be determined later. There were a few of ways for people to be excluded from the draft lottery. One way was to go to college; however, not many people had the ambition for college at the time. A second way was to get married, but he had already done that. A third way to avoid the draft was to enlist. If someone were to enlist, they could choose many things that a person who was drafted could not choose. An enlisted person could choose which branch of military they wanted to join, where he went for the military, and what his job was in the military. An enlisted man would have to serve for four years. They thoughts the United States could not let communism spread in the world. One of the first steps to stopping communism from spreading was to stop it in Vietnam. Communism was a hot topic for the war. The Cold War was happening and we did not want the Soviet Union to have another ally. Supporters thought democracy was the best type of government. They wanted democracy as Vietnam’s government. If communism took over all of Vietnam, the United States would loose their influence inside of Southeast Asia, and communism would be able to spread.
