Over the last seventy years or so, the healthcare industry has been working towards the ideal way to treat all patients. Beginning in the 1940’s, researchers were dedicated to treating patients with infections. However, in the more recent years we are trying a different approach. The United State health care industry is emphasizing more about preventing the spread of infection and educating our patients. Regardless of the standard of care, they will need to continue to adjust how nursing can improve patient care to implement this change. With that in mind, hospitals are taking action to lower nursing to patient ratios, so that the nursing staff will get more time to help diagnose patients in an acute care setting and give quality care. Desai & Maciunskaite (2006) talk about the mortality rate due to chronic diseases and chronic health problems (pg. 330). Our public health are understanding what steps we need to take to fix the past by making smarter health conscious choices (Desai & Maciunskaite, 2006, pg 330). Majority of the people in the United State are choosing to stop smoking, eat a healthier diet and plan to go to the doctor for preventable measures. Lucero, Lake, & Aiken (2010) suggest that the evidence of quality nursing, when we are able to identify and prevent complications early on (pg. 2194). When nursing has appropriate time with patients, the staff members are able to identify complications early into their care (Lucero, Lake, & Aiken, 2010, pg. 2194). They are able to take the time to do proper assessments, monitor vital signs, and be there for the patient when they are not feeling right. Furthermore, the nursing staff is able to act quickly, before the patient’s condition becomes progressively worse. Overall, when nursing staff needs have been met, patients receive better quality of care and fewer infections are acquired during hospital
