“Peace is a journey of a thousand miles and it must be taken one step at a time”(Lyndon B. Johnson). The United Nations was founded in 1945 by 51 different states including the United Kingdom. The UN was formed to unite the world and establish world peace. The UN formed the Security Council to take responsibility of world peace and security. The council consists of 15 members, five of the countries are permanent members with veto power, and the other 10 on voted on every two years in a staggered vote. There are 193 countries in the UN, only leaving out North Korea, Palestine, the Vatican City, Kosovo, and Taiwan. The United Kingdom is an important member of the United Nations because it is one of the biggest contributors to peacekeeping, a permanent member of the Security Council with veto power, and is a major presence in United Nations International Children 's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) and other UN agencies. The United Nations was created as a successor to the League of Nations. The League of Nations was founded in January, 1920 after World War I. The League of Nations was one of the factors that started WWII. The league failed because a few of the world powers declined to join (Russia, Germany, and the United States). Then, the UN was founded to establish world peace, and overall create a better society. Furthermore, the UN created the Security Council to be in charge of world peace and security.
