The United Nations has proven to be very influential and effective at combating terrorism whether it be within the United Nations or outside, the UN always comes forth to condemn the acts of terrorism, lend a helping hand, and help prevent any similar situation in any manner they can. The policies and legislation talked about is very informative and important to our security, human rights, protection, safety, and how the United Nations has helped shape the world leader’s legislation in their respective countries or states in terrorism and brought it into the spotlight as well as bring about global realization of terrorism being a real threat and its ability to affect us all.

By implementing sanctions the UN extradited certain individuals as well as hoped to send a clear message to change the behavior of state sponsors of terrorism. In response to this the United States viewed this as an important deterrent to the states considering support for terrorist acts or groups. The UN sanctions were quite successful in the cases of Libya and Sudan by making the support of terroristic activities more expensive causing both states to be responsive to these changing incentives. The sanctions also helped changed the public attitudes of states towards terrorism, especially sponsors of terrorism. The UN was acknowledged and applauded for its sanctions by the United States in the late 1990’s and in 2001 because of the continuation of slowing state sponsorship of terrorism. The most important and vital effect the sanctions the UN placed into order was to stigmatize terrorist activities and consolidate a growing international consensus that saw terrorism as an illegitimate activity that needed to be countered through collective international actions and by implementing these sanctions and the success they were having seem them being put into place, the UN sanction regimes paved the way for more forceful international responses to terrorism after the attacks on September 11th, 2001. There have been some advances such as “progress toward building a normative framework for terrorism since September 11, has been considerable, but significant problems remain,” (The Global Regime for Terrorism, 2013), progress has been made since September 11, but we still have challenges to overcome, and the United Nations really needs to be proactive in really combating terrorism and any future attacks. The threat of terrorism will always be around and is always lurking but the better the tracking and monitoring of suspicious individuals or group affiliates leaving the country and crossing borders is taken into effect and utilized, the safer the world will be for another day and one less attack will be diverted. Terrorism is a very dangerous and threatening mindset to hold but certain twisted and deranged individuals are either brought up as such or mentally challenged to think hurting others and destroying lives will make theirs better or bring them a happy afterlife or whatnot.
